“Or can they benefit you or harm you?”

Tafsir

Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) continued to ask questions to his people. And those whom you worship as gods, who are ignorant of themselves, can they do you any good or harm? By asking questions to his people, Hadrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) wants to make them think rationally. Because Allah has created the intellect to know His Essence. But if a person follows the path shown by his intellect and not the path shown by his ego, he will find the Truth.

Now, Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verse 73. Or can they bring you benefit, benefit or harm? Indeed — our Lord, the one God who created the worlds, created the worlds, and what we would need He placed in the world; He prepared our food and drink for us. The Lord, the Lord serves man — look, Allah serves man. He prepares every kind of food for man throughout his life. And what does He want from man? He wants His Essence to be known. His Essence. Allah has no need of people. Allah is indeed hüve'l-evvelü ve'l-âhiru ve'z-zâhiru ve'l-bâtın — the First, the Last. From His being the Manifest and the Hidden; but in the beginning He subsisted by His Essence.

There was no one. He willed to be known. So He created man for this. He created him so that He would be known. And He granted us every kind of blessing. In that case, if we turn our backs on the One who gives the blessings, who gives us life, who brought us into being from nothing, would we have used our reason? Would we, in conscience, have served Allah? In that case, if we eat and drink like animals, have intercourse, and in the end pass our lives like animals, like carcasses, when we go before Allah Almighty, anyway, "We will not keep account with them," (?) Allah Almighty. Their place is the fire of Hell.

Now, you have been created as a human. You have been created so honourable. You have become the choicest being on earth. At least use your reason and do not worship what you make with your hands, or associate partners with Allah. Do not say Jesus, David is the son of Allah. Do not say Mary is His wife. Allah subsists by His Essence. He has taken neither a wife nor a child. Nor is there anything like Him. Kul hüvallâhü ehad, Allâhü's-samed, lem yelid ve lem yûled ve This is Allah. If you associate partners with Allah, tomorrow when you go before your Lord: these verses — did you not hear them from people?

Allah does not call anyone to account for a (?) not heard. If we are human, we will know the purpose of our creation. We will know the One who created us. Do you not know your mother and father? Can you deny your mother and father? Can you say, "No, I was not born of my mother"? If you said, "I was not born of my mother," "I was not born," who would believe you? They would call you mad. Can you deny your father? If you had no father, where would you — how would your mother get pregnant, and how would you be born? Just as you would deny your mother and father, can you deny Allah? In this case. That is why, as for Allah, who created the worlds, who brought these worlds into being from nothing — just as a person is born of a mother and a father, just as he himself came into the world as a being, one must know that this universe too was created by a Creator, and, as a human, be a servant to Him. And what does Allah Almighty say?

The heavens and the earth, and what is between the two, have known the remembrance of their Lord. That is, just as a whole factory produces a product and puts its emblem on it, takes out its patent, Allah Almighty too has sealed His patent on His creations. In the cells, in the atoms of all living and non-living matter there are electrons and protons, that is, plus and minus electrodes. When these spin around their own axes, each of them remembers Allah. It remembers each of Allah's names. Here all of existence signifies that these were created by Allah, created by one God, and that there is no god but Him.

And in this case, if you do not use your reason and rebel against Allah, if, although Allah Almighty created you honourable, you prepare your place as Hell, as a place of torment — is the fault Allah's? When the judge puts you in prison for a crime you committed, is the fault the judge's? Did the judge accuse you and put you in prison? No, you put yourself in prison. Just so, this world is the likeness and shadow of the hereafter. If you too deny Allah, if you go to the hereafter thus without faith, you will have prepared your own place yourself. May Allah make us all the community of His (?) Beloved.

Yes. What does it say? Or can they bring you benefit or harm? it says. Abraham (peace be upon him) continues to ask his people questions. Well then, those you worship as God, unaware of themselves — can they bring you any benefit or harm? he says. By asking his people questions, Abraham (peace be upon him) wants to lead them to reflect with reason. Because Allah created reason as the knower of His Essence. But if man were to take not the path his nafs shows but the path his reason shows, he would find the truth. But man lets his nafs gain the upper hand over his reason. Although his reason shows him what is right, he does not part from his nafs, and with the yoke that Satan has put on his neck, he departs from Allah's path. Yes.
