They said, “no, but we found our forefathers doing this.”
Tafsir
His people replied to Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as follows. Yes, we know that they do not hear us and they can neither benefit nor harm us. But we found our fathers worshipping them.
If one thinks rationally, they follow in the footsteps of what their fathers worshipped, they compete with each other to associate partners with Allah, but they never obey Allah and His Prophets, even though so many Prophets and miracles have come to make them obey Allah. They are not following in the footsteps of their fathers, they are following in the footsteps of their ego.
Allah (swt) says in one of His Verses, "Have you not seen those who have made their nafs as gods?" According to this verse, they will never return to Allah (swt) with their egoistic feelings, their immoral aspects, their resorting to haram, their wandering on dark and swampy paths, and making no concessions to their nafs. Because that was his will in the past. He has written his will as his destiny. Since these people cannot escape from this destiny, they prefer to live in pursuit of such filth and associating partners with Allah. That is why they say that we found our fathers worshipping them.
So use your mind now, your father is not going to save you. The object of your worship is ignorant of itself, unable to do either good or harm. So where are you going? In this way, are you not wronging your nafs, are you not turning away from Allah who created you and incurring His wrath?" Hadrat Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' warned them.

departs. Yes. Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verse 74. They answered as follows. No, but we found our fathers doing so. His people answer Abraham (peace be upon him) as follows. Yes. We know too. They do not hear us. They can bring us neither benefit nor harm. But we found our fathers worshipping these, they say.
If one thinks with sound reason — in the footsteps of what their fathers worshipped they compete with one another to associate partners with Allah. They compete with one another, yet although so many prophets and miracles came so that they would obey Allah, they never obey Allah and the Prophet. In fact these do not follow in the footsteps of their fathers but follow in the footsteps of their nafs. Because each person, by the will of his own nafs, is acting out the covenant he gave Allah Almighty, playing out its scenario. Yes.
Allah Almighty, in a verse — according to the verse "Have you not seen the one who deifies his nafs" — these, with their carnal feelings, their immoral sides, by turning to the forbidden, wandering on dark and swampy paths, by not yielding anything of their nafs, never return to Allah. Because in the beginning, too, that was his wish. He had his wish written for himself as destiny. Since these people cannot step outside this destiny of theirs, in pursuit of such filth they prefer to live associating partners with Allah. That is why they say: we found our fathers worshipping these. So now use your reason.
Your father is not going to save you either. And the object you worship is unaware of itself; it cannot give itself any benefit or harm — it is in no condition to. In that case, where are you going? Are you not, in this way, wronging your own nafs? By distancing yourself from Allah who created you, are you not incurring His wrath? With these words Abraham (peace be upon him) gave them warnings. Yes.
