They did not make each other abandon bad deeds. How truly bad it is what they are doing.
Tafsir
These people did not point out the truth by warning each other of the evil they were doing. When they acted contrary to the Verses of Allah, they did not tell each other that what they did was unacceptable and that they were sinners in the sight of Allah. They would compete with each other in doing evil. They used to boast of their evil deeds, as if they had made a virtue out of the sin they had committed. This mentality is still prevalent among people today.
Allah has forbidden drinking, gambling and fornication. People think that by drinking alcohol and gambling, they are making it a matter of pride amongst each other, that they are in the class of human beings and that they are doing a great deed. Likewise, people who talk about the adultery they have committed with pride are becoming more and more common today. Instead of warning each other, instead of fearing Allah and being ashamed of people, these people, whose veils of haya have been torn and whose morals have fallen silent, cannot escape from the calamities that Allah has given them, even though their forms are not changed into monkeys and rhinos.
How evil is what these people do! People who disobey Allah's commands, who oppress people, who live according to their own desires, who collect what is lawful and what is unlawful, who live their lives without warning each other, who sell the life of this world for the life of the Hereafter, how evil indeed is what they do. Because these are the people who bought the torment of the Hereafter while they were living in the realm of property.
What is said in the video
Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 79. They did not try to turn one another away from the evil they committed. By oath, how evil is what they did, it says. A nation, about the evil it has done, its brothers, spouses, friends, those it knows or does not know, is obliged to warn. What is it? When a person commits an evil, the other person is obliged to warn his brother, spouse, friend, relatives, kin, those he knows or does not know. Because that evil spreads and finally a state of consenting to that evil arises. Whoever stays silent in the face of evil is as if he committed it, it says. So, they did not try to turn one another away from the evil they committed.
By oath, how evil is what they did, it says. He swears an oath. Why? Allah Almighty swears an oath.
Although I brought them into being from nothing, although I granted them a life, although within this life I provided them with every kind of sustenance, they forgot their Lord. They plunged into pleasure and revelry.
They inclined toward what their Lord created. Bound up with it, they forgot the One who created it. What a bitter thing this is. What an ungrateful thing. Ungrateful. Yes. These people, in the evils they did, would not warn one another and show the truth. That actions contrary to Allah's verses were being done, that what they did could not be approved, that they were sinners in the sight of Allah, they would not tell one another. They competed with one another in doing evil. As if they had accomplished something with the sins they committed, of the evils they did they boasted. Even today this mentality, widely among people of our time, continues.
Of this mentality it says: how evil is what they do. 'O people, do not have your bodies tattooed,' it says; they get tattoos. 'O people, do not show your private parts,' it says; in showing their private parts they compete. 'O people, do not dress in a way that shows your contours,' it says. In a way that even, pardon me, the underpants beneath are visible, they dress. Yes. Is what they do not evil? Are you warning (?), Hodja? Why are we talking here? Look, I am telling you about everything.
Doctor Mutlu — just as sometimes shame is set aside, in the religion of Islam too, to tell the truth, without ever letting go of propriety, everything we are obliged to tell. As I said a moment ago. What does it say? Her wearing tight clothes, dressing so that her underpants beneath will not be seen. Well, you can't explain this any other way. Of course she'll wear tight clothes. What happens then? All her (?) come into the open. How evil is what she does? Why how evil? Because Allah wants to protect her honour and dignity. Although our Lord wants her, to evil, a — what do they call it — not to be exposed to slander, and not to be violated by others, these people, consenting to everything, human feelings — the most honourably created being, man, his own dignity trampling underfoot, inclined toward every evil, goes on with his life.
(?) How evil is what he does. In the end every soul will taste death. With the verse 'Your return is to your Lord,' their place, it says, that return is an evil place. What an evil bed that is, it says. Yes. Because He pities people, Allah Almighty says: by oath, how evil is what they do.
This mentality still continues widely among people today. Those who uncover, those who flaunt, how much — you know, people say 'daring', what they call 'daring': those who dress to show their private parts, who not in vests but in bras go out in public, these point at one another saying 'how nicely dressed', how nicely dressed — one feels ashamed, ashamed. Yes. Allah has forbidden alcohol, gambling and fornication. People, by drinking and taking alcohol, making it a matter of (?) among themselves, think they have entered the class of human beings and done something clever. People who tell everyone about the fornication they committed, with pride, are spreading more and more today.
Instead of warning one another, instead of fearing Allah and being ashamed before people, people whose veils of modesty are torn and whose morals have (?), although their forms are not changed into monkeys and swine, from the calamities Allah gives they cannot escape.
So, how evil is what these people do. Defying Allah's commands, doing wrong to people, living by their nafs, amassing without regard to halal and haram, without warning one another, people who live out their lives, people who sell, exchanging for the life of this world, the life of the hereafter — what such people do is truly evil. Because these are people who, while living in the material world, buy the torment of the hereafter; that is what they are.
