Translation

Moses said “Oh Dear my Lord! I cannot control anyone other than myself and my brother; separate us from this group who went astray”.

Tafsir

In response to the objections of this people, Hazrat Moses made a supplication to Allah (O Allah, I cannot control anyone other than myself and my brother. Separate us from this people); as a messenger of Allah, although he conveyed Allah's command to the community of the people of Israel, this community turned their backs on Hazrat Moses and Allah, and when Hazrat Moses was not yet sure what to do and how to act, he made a supplication to Allah. When he said, "O Allah, separate us from this community, show me the way, tell me what to do," Allah (swt) showed the way to Moses and advised him.

Verse 25 of Surah Al-Ma'idah.

Moses says as follows. Moses: My Lord, I have power over none but myself and my brother. I have power over none but myself and my brother Aaron. That is, how obedient Aaron was to Moses, and that Aaron too was a prophet. He too is an obedient prophet. Because He gave him a helper. Separate us from this people who have strayed from the path, he said. Yes, separate the people who have strayed from the path. In response to these words of this people, Moses pleads to Allah. O my Allah, I have power over none but myself and my brother. His saying 'separate us from this people' — although he conveyed Allah's command to the community of the Children of Israel he was among, this community turned its back on Moses and on Allah, and so when Moses came to a state of not knowing what to do and how to act, that is, when Moses came to a state of not knowing what to do and how to act, he pleads to Allah.

What does he say? Separate us from this community. Yes. I — You sent me as a prophet, my Allah. I do my duty as it should be done, in accordance with Your command. But this people, although they have seen so many miracles, so many blessings, never listen to me. I have power over none but my brother Aaron. That is, him I can lead onto my path as I wish. As for the others, contrary to Your command, on the path I tell them they never follow me. I am left alone in this situation, he says. I am left alone. I am at a loss too. What to do? Within the duty I will give me, within the duties I gave, what am I perhaps falling short in, in my duties, my Allah, he says.

He also blames himself here. What am I perhaps falling short in? If there is such a thing, set me right. That is, warn me. If there is no such thing, then it is parting between them and me, he says now. Because he can no longer (?). He too is a human being. He too is a human being. Yes.

Separate us from this people. Show me the way, he says. Look, do you see? Show me the way. When he said, let me know what to do, my Allah, Allah Almighty showed Moses his way and (?) him. He shows Moses his way, that is, He (?) that will rescue him from that distress. Look what He says.
