When a message arrives to them concerning security or fear, they immediately circulate it. However, if they had brought it to the Messenger or to someone who has authority among them, those who possess insight would have known how to derive the correct conclusion. If Allah’s blessings and mercy were not upon you, with the exception of a few, you would have followed Shaytan.
Tafsir
When news comes to these people, good or bad, they do not investigate whether it is true or not, but they immediately evaluate it according to their own minds and convey false news around them. However, if they had brought this news to the Messenger among them, or to the elders and scholars among them, the elders or those in authority among them would have informed them what this news was and whether it was true or not, which they themselves could not understand, and which they evaluated falsely according to their own minds. At the same time, these people would be prevented from making a fuss or misleading people.
Allah (swt) is addressing people with this Ayat (verse), O people! Do not say or spread anything about which you are not informed and of which you are not sure of its truth. People will believe it to be true and will be aroused. Riots will break out among societies. By creating a fire of sedition among people, you will cause oppression of the helpless people. This will cost the people dearly. Allah (swt) commands people to be careful with their words so that they do not harm one another, and to take matters that they do not understand to those who are competent in the matter or who have authority among them, and to explain the matter to the competent people. Otherwise, many mistakes will be made, which will be insurmountable. The damage would be great.
(Were it not for Allah's grace and mercy on mankind, you would have followed Satan, except a few of you). Because Allah (swt) has created human beings incomplete in mind, they are in need of learning. In this learning, they commit many mistakes and cause wrongdoings. Also, because of their lack of knowledge and information, they commit many sins against Allah's command, knowingly or unknowingly. If Allah had not forgiven them for these mistakes and sins they committed through their repentance, He says in a verse (If you had been caught immediately for the sins you committed, you would not have found a single living creature on the earth). So Allah's mercy and grace upon people is life for people.
When Allah (swt) sends His creatures to the unseen realm of the world, the unseen enemy Satan (shaytan), by giving people all kinds of mischief and temptations, leads them astray from the true and straight path of Allah (swt). Allah (swt) gives life to people by sending us His verses in the Holy Qur'an, enlightening our path and showing us the truth and falsehood. He has fully informed people of what they need in order for them to be guided. He has prevented the enemy of mankind, the devil and the ego. If people follow the Ayat of Allah, fulfill His commands, and repent of their sins, Allah is compassionate and merciful to His servants, He will forgive their sins and grant them the mercy of Allah. This is Allah's mercy to mankind.
What is said in the video
At verse 83 of Surah An-Nisa we had stopped. Allah Almighty, in the verse: when news of security or fear comes to them, they at once spread it. Yet had they taken it to the Messenger or to those in authority among them, those among them who understand the inner side of the matter would have known what it is. Had it not been for Allah's grace and mercy upon you, all but a few of you would have followed Satan and gone, He says. In Allah's mercy upon us have faith.
Our Lord's mercy upon us is faith. This faith: in us, (?), taking refuge in our Lord, trusting, fear, fear of our Lord and pangs of conscience arise. That is what protects us. Had it not been for Allah's mercy, He says, had there not been such traits in faith, you would have followed Satan and gone, He says. Yes, when news of a good or bad kind comes to these people, whether it is true or not, without checking, they at once judge it by their own reasoning and spread false, wrong news around. This verse is roughly close to what I explained just now. For example, people, although they have no knowledge about people, what they don't know rightly, since they take what they know wrongly as right, when the truths are explained to them, as if that person were explaining it wrongly, putting himself forward and attacking the person with false words shows that person's ignorance.
It shows his not knowing that he doesn't know, his lack of knowledge. Yes. So these too, when news of security or fear comes, out of their fears or out of their trust in one another, at once to spread it they try. Yet had they taken it to the competent, that is, had they taken it to the commanders over them, or to the one who governs that state, had they taken this news to that person, the inner side of the matter he would have explained to them better.
Because with the informants around him he knows best what is right. Even if he doesn't know, then that person, being responsible for people, that commander or that head of state, since for those people he is responsible, would find out its truth in the best way with the means in their hands. And in this way he would not let people panic. People drive people into panic with falsehoods. They spread false news. Wars are like this too. Wars.
The losing side makes propaganda. Your armies have broken up. The borders, well, have been seized. All the people have perished. Look, the enemy on the other side is coming with its tanks and guns. It drives people into panic with fear.
Wars are like this too. You will not believe these. In our time (?) events are like this too.
Certain words get spread. When there is chaos, they at once start going at one another. One must not give these any value. So that people can preserve their unity and togetherness, Allah Almighty, look, how beautifully He says it in the verses. When you hear something, do not spread it around falsely and (?) the nation, He says.
Yet had they brought this news to the Messenger among them, or conveyed it to the elders over them, to their scholars, then without room for their false judgments by their own reasoning, which could not grasp it, the elders among them or those in authority would have known what it is. Yes, those persons have certain feelings, or are in possession of events. At the same time, these people's throwing everything into uproar, or making people say false things, would have been prevented. Yes, had they taken it to the elders over them, to their scholars, or, Allah's Messenger, the word, had they taken it to His Messenger. The Messenger (?) alive and standing, the word (?) alive.
Yes.
Now it comes to my mind; I can't pass over it; I'll say it. Those who say the Prophet (peace be upon him) died, and say this man brings them back again.
What knowledge do they have that they say the Prophet died; whoever calls him dead, it says, that one says dead. He denies the verse. Because he is alive, he is alive and a mercy to the worlds. So he is living. If he has tasted death... we do not bring souls back. We love our Lord's command. But if people's minds cannot grasp this, of course they will say so. And with (?) ideas they will attack people. How far does it go? You fire a bullet at armour. The bullet. But you cannot pierce the armour. The armour is made for it. The armour is such armour, armour from the Owner of the worlds. That armour cannot be pierced. They are the verses.
Yes.
So Allah, with this verse, addressing people: O people! Something you have no knowledge of, whose truth you are not sure of, do not say it or spread it. If you say and write it, you yourselves too will believe that lie tomorrow; you, your family, those around you will panic. People believing these to be true, (?), in social life, (?) acts do not cause, in social life. Because if they believe false news, news that is not true, rebellion arises in society. Or disobedience toward one another arises, a division arises. Because people's characters are weak. When faith is weak too, it is very hard to strengthen these.
By starting the fire of discord among people, do not cause (?) people to suffer (?). There are those helpless ones, there are powerless people. What will they do then? If (?) a war, people rush to the markets, we see it today. In Japan, with (?), they have left nothing in the markets; they took, looted, snatched, carried everything off. Well, there is nothing left to eat or drink. People panic, of course. Well, a person of faith must not do this.
In this case the people of faith must protect their unity and togetherness, must protect (?), must counsel and calm them.
The bill for this costs people dearly. Yes, false news, and even if it is true, setting people against one another and drowning everything in uproar costs people heavy bills. (?) fluctuates in the market, interest rates rise, bank interest rates rise, or people rush to withdraw their money from banks. Well, let me say, suddenly an abnormal (?) arises. That is, everything gets mixed up. Goes at each other.
So that people are not harmed by one another, Allah Almighty commands that they watch their words, that matters whose inner side they cannot understand be taken to those competent in the matter or to those in authority among them, and that the matter be told to the competent, He commands. Everything to the competent. Everything is to be told to the competent.
Even a dream, tell it to the competent, it says.
Otherwise it causes many errors; mistakes that cannot be undone are made; the harm is great.
Had it not been for Allah Almighty's grace and mercy upon people, all but a few of you would have followed Satan and gone, He says. Of course, as I said a moment ago, our faith protects us. Allah Almighty's verses protect us too. What does it say? Deeds depend on intention. I made a mistake. Say I made a mistake. But I made the mistake knowing it to be right. I know it as right. I made a mistake. I saw that it was a mistake.
Praise be to Allah. I too knew it as right. My Lord, God willing, will not write a sin for me. Because deeds depend on intention, you say. Look what you did. You leaned your back on your Lord. He protected you. That is, that faith protected you. That verse protected you. But if you know nothing of the verses, of Allah, if you know nothing of Allah, the mistakes you make gnaw at you inside like a worm; I always make mistakes, you say. Those mistakes, mistakes upon mistakes, take you and make you fall into Satan's trap. Anyway, you (?) like that all the time, you always make mistakes anyway. Then you prefer wrong paths, try ways of living off the backs of this one and that one, try to get by as a parasite on people's backs.
See, you followed Satan and went. Allah's mercy protects us, His verses protect us. As for the others, the faithless, the mistakes they make are mistakes anyway. Because they fear the laws, they try not to make mistakes. But among themselves, mistakes are a thousand for a penny. A thousand for a penny. All mistakes anyway. In every step they take. Actions outside Islam. In this case they follow the footsteps of Satan. Yes. This is the difference between Islam and non-Muslims.
Because Allah Almighty created people deficient in reason, people need to learn. In this learning they make many mistakes and cause errors. Also, because they lack knowledge and learning, against Allah's command, knowingly or unknowingly, they commit many sins. So, these errors people make and the sins they have committed, Allah, even though they are forgiven them through their repentance, had He not forgiven them... in a verse: had you been seized at once for the sins you committed, on the earth you would not find a single living being, He says. Our Lord created man's reason deficient, you see.
With that deficiency he will make mistakes. With his mistake he will know his helplessness. He will turn to his Lord and ask for pardon and forgiveness. What will he say? O my Lord! You too know that I did this unknowingly, or did it when I followed my nafs, did it in my period of ignorance. But You are, not my elders, the Owner of the worlds, abundant in forgiveness, a Sultan. Your pardon and forgiveness is (?), my Allah. You know my heart better than I do. You also know my secrets hidden in (?) of my heart. You know the secrets of hearts. So in this case, I declare with my tongue and confirm with my heart that, when I again, in Your presence, knowingly or unknowingly commit such a mistake, I will act in a way that befits You, and for the mistakes I have made I will ask You for pardon and forgiveness.
Because I am deficient; all my life I cannot live without mistakes; You created me that way; my reason is deficient; but by saying I will not live without mistakes, not that I will always commit mistakes is meant; unknowingly, involuntarily, or unable to resist my nafs, for the mistakes I made in helplessness, (?) I forgive, and I will strive not to do it again; forgive me, my Allah, we will say, our Lord. Do you know what He says to you? (?) My servant. Come. You speak. Command. You command. Come. Just turn back to your Lord. Yes.
So we say these mercies of Allah upon people are all His generosity. That is, His forgiveness, and that people who turn to our Lord, all of them, even those who do not turn, are Allah's servants, that there is no god but Him, that those who do not turn deify their own nafs and turn their backs on Allah, and those who turn bow their necks to Allah Almighty, ah, this, in their periods of forgiveness, when they deem Allah Almighty great and take refuge in Him, Allah Almighty opens the doors of mercy to them, in His verses He informs us. Not with one or two verses. With many verses. From beginning to end.
Now, pay attention to our Lord's verses.
From beginning to end, every verse both speaks of Himself, Himself, and also a way to us shows. All verses are like that. Whichever verse you look at.
In this case, if a person spoke, always saying I, I, I, I, a person would get tired at some point. But Allah Almighty describes His Essence so beautifully with the verses, with those words, both He speaks of His Essence, that there is no god but Him, and He shows us the way. Open whichever verse you like; let's open a verse, for example. Here it says: if the People of the Book had believed and guarded against evils, We would surely have covered their past evils and admitted them to gardens abundant in blessings, it says. Who does this? Allah does this. Look, Allah. This turns out to be verse 65 of Surah Al-Ma'idah.
Let's open another. Al-Ma'idah, 94. verse. O you who believe. Who says this? Allah says it. O you who believe. Allah, with game that your hands and your hands and your spears can reach, by forbidding it, tests you, so that (?) in places no one sees, it becomes clear who truly fears Him. Look. Every verse. No need to read this. It both describes His Essence and shows the way, the way.
This is a word of our Lord (?). Yes. With our Lord giving us that light of faith, faith, (?)
With Allah Almighty sending the people He created to the world, an unseen world, Satan, the unseen enemy, giving man all kinds of whisperings and tricks, leads people astray from Allah Almighty's true and right path. What does Allah Almighty say?
O children of Adam! Satan is your enemy. Do not follow his traces, his footsteps, He says. Yes, when he was cursed, Satan says to Allah Almighty: I too, before Your servants who come to You, will set traps; from coming to You I will hold them back. And Allah Almighty says: O Iblis, whoever follows you, take them, I have given them to you, He says. Because at that address 'Elestü bi Rabbiküm', when He said 'I am your Lord', those leftists, I say leftists, I mean the leftists. That is, except those who use them as tools, he is a Muslim. He is a Muslim. But he does not know what a leftist is. (?) But when he says I am a leftist, let's say it (?).
Ve ashabu'l-meş'emeti ma ashabu'l-meş'eme: O leftists, woe to you, He says; I am speaking of those leftists. Yes.
These, following Satan's trail, become the two-legged followers on the earth.
What does Allah Almighty say to Satan? If they follow you, I have given them to you. Who are they? Those leftists. He already knows they will not return to Him, Allah Almighty. Where does He know it? When He made the covenant with them, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 172. Since He knows they will not return to Him, that they will not return to Allah, He knows; take, I have given you to them; you are hell's (?), and they are your aides anyway. They too will go there; no difference, probably; I have given them to you, probably, He says. But, He says, look: to My servant who knows Me, the temptation Satan gives is (?), He says. Why?
Allah's verses, our faith, are a shield against his temptation, armour. As I said a moment ago, no one can pierce that armour. That armour is the verses. The verses cannot be pierced. Yes.
With Allah Almighty sending the people He created to the world, an unseen world, Satan, the unseen enemy, giving man all kinds of whisperings and tricks, leads people astray from Allah Almighty's true, friendly, right path. Of course not all; as I explained just now, why did Allah Almighty give Satan the chance? Because they too needed a partisan to show the bad, needed one. To show the bad paths. Because it is not befitting Allah Almighty's glory; He did not show the bad paths.
Those deniers, those who turn their backs on Allah, those who seek a Lord other than Allah, those who seek for themselves a religion other than Islam, since they turned their backs on Allah's mercy upon them and their own nafs deified, they too needed, to show them the way on that bad path, a partisan. They needed a companion, a leader. That is why Satan was allowed. Yes. Not over everyone.
So Allah Almighty, by sending us His verses with the Holy Quran, has lit our way. That is, the temptation Satan would give us harmless has become. He has shown truth and falsehood. Truth and falsehood.
For people to attain guidance, whatever they need, flawlessly, He has said. Whatever is needed. Whatever wet and dry there is is in the Quran, says Allah Almighty. He has cut off the way of Satan, people's enemy, and of their nafs.
With His verses, with His verses, the temptation the nafs and Satan would give man, He has cut off. If people follow Allah's verses, carry out His commands, and for their sins repent, since Allah Almighty is compassionate and merciful to His servants, He forgives their sins, and they attain Allah's mercy. This is Allah's mercy to people. At the same time this is Allah Almighty's promise to people. At the same time, because Allah Almighty loves people very much, for them to return to His Essence, these are doors of opportunity He offers them.
