Translation

Give to women their marriage gifts willingly. If they give to you part of the gift, willingly and freely, take it in satisfaction.

Tafsir

Give the women you marry their mahr willingly. What is Mahr? Mahr is a woman's right to chastity. It can be money or property. According to the Hanafis, the minimum amount is ten dirhams of silver.

There is no maximum line for the mahr. It can be given in advance, or half in advance and half later. Or if the woman wants, she can leave it with her husband on the condition that she will get her mahr later. Or she can donate it. Do not usurp the women's Mahr, but pay it to them in full at the time of separation, or do not withhold it from them at the time of marriage, but return it to them voluntarily.

It also increases the love and respect between the husband and wife for each other. And if women donate part of their Mahr to you, eat it freely, and people will not be held responsible for it.

What is said in the video

We come to the fourth verse of Surah An-Nisa. Give women their mahr with a willing heart. If, out of their own goodwill, they give you part of that mahr, then enjoy it, it says. Apart from that, the mahr is this: it is the mahr you will give to the woman you marry. Give women their mahr with a willing heart; if, out of their own goodwill, they give you part of that mahr, then enjoy it, says Allah Almighty. For example, someone is going to marry. Who? Let's say Kadir, or Mehmet.

There is the right of mahr. They turned this into a bride price. The bride-price right, bride price, bride price, they said. They said they are selling women. They deliberately did away with the verses. In fact it is not a bride price. It is the woman's right for her chastity. It is to be given to the woman. This is Allah's command. In this situation, ignorant fathers, calling that mahr bride money, do not know it. You will give me this much money, you will give that much. So it becomes a kind of selling, so to speak. But if he said, my daughter has a mahr. What is this mahr? 10 kilos of gold, 50 kilos of gold, 1,000 lira, 3,000 lira.

The lowest is 160 grams of silver. What was it? The lowest is 160 grams of silver. Now, Mehmet Efendi loves the girl, and her father says, you will give her (?) five thousand lira. Mehmet has no money, Mehmet also needs to marry, and the girl loves him, and her father would give her to Mehmet, but he wants the five thousand lira. In this case that is not the father's money, it is the girl's money.

Mehmet Efendi borrows the five thousand lira, finds it and gives it. Later his wife sees that her husband is in difficulty, and says, dear, (?), you have such a worry? Well, when I married you I had borrowed this, and I was to pay it to so-and-so. So my situation is not good, that is why I am struggling. Take it, dear, let this be yours, she says. Oh look, they attain salvation. She gave it. That is when Allah Almighty says, take it and eat. Take it, give it. That is, your trouble goes away. That is what enjoy it means: your trouble goes away. Yes. Give the women you marry their mahr with a willing heart.

That is, do not say, I am giving her this money, but my heart stays with the money; never say such a thing. Because you, you are taking a human being whom Allah will entrust to you. This is a human being, this is not an animal. This is not (?) some other created being; it is a human being. A human being like you; would you want to be sold to someone else as a slave? But you work for someone else in freedom, willingly. In the same way you will give that woman her mahr willingly. Willingly.

What is mahr? Mahr is the woman's right for her chastity. You have written it already. It can be money or property. It does not have to be money. Maybe I gave you three dönüms of field. Maybe I gave you ten sheep. Or I gave you three oxen, cows. That is what he says.

According to the Hanafis, the minimum mahr is ten dirhams of silver, it says. I wonder how many grams ten dirhams would be? Do you know? Suat, what (?) is? I do not know either. As far as I remember it is something like a hundred and forty grams. Ten dirhams. You know, there is the metre and there is the fathom; say a metre is a hundred centimetres, a fathom is one and a half of that. For example there is the centimetre: ten millimetres make a centimetre. And there is the inch. Three and four tenths centimetres. Right? Something like that. This is ten dirhams. I do not know how many grams it comes to.

But as far as I remember it is probably a hundred and forty grams. If anyone knows, let them inform us here about these grams. But what is it according to the Hanafi school? Ten dirhams of silver. The mahr has no upper limit.

So there is no rule that says you cannot give her more than fifty thousand lira. You can give as much mahr as you like. Just as it can be paid in advance, half can be paid in advance and half later. Or, if the woman wishes, she can leave her mahr with her husband on condition of receiving it later. Or, if she wishes, she can give it away. Do not seize the mahr of women. At separation, pay it to them in full. Or, during the marriage, do not withhold the woman's mahr from her and willingly return this sum to your women. Our Lord says in one of His verses:

When you divorce your women, it says.

Even if their mahr upon you were a load of camels, if you gave it to her, if only you knew your place in His sight, it says. What was it? Even if the mahr (?) a load of camels, if you gave it to her, if only you knew your place in His sight. Why? Give it to her, it says, even if it (?) a load of camels. Because that woman is helpless. Even her working is haram as long as there is no necessity. As long as there is no necessity. If you give her that mahr, even a load of camels, you will have met her needs, you will have provided her an income for her whole life, you will have protected her chastity from working outside, from people around casting eyes on her; because of that, because of helping the religion of Islam, if only you knew your place in Allah's sight, it says.

How beautiful.

(?) Hodja, a dirham is 3.2 grams, it says. 3.2 grams. Gökçen also says 3.20 grams. It makes no difference. So 10 dirhams means 30 grams of silver. 30 grams of silver. We were saying 140; so it was 40 grams of silver. So we had added the 100 later. So it corresponds to 40 grams of silver. Rounding the fraction up to 40. It is forty grams of silver. Yes. How nice. Look, we too have learned (?) at this age.

Mahr also increases love and respect between wife and husband toward each other. Between the woman and her husband. For example, the man needs money. The woman took out the mahr and gave it to whom? To her husband. The husband's love for his wife grows. She stood by him in his hard times. And the woman is pleased by her husband's love for her. And both of them preserve the family bonds with love and affection for each other. If the women give you part of their mahr, then enjoy it. One is not held accountable for this gift. Even if you have no debt, even if you have no expense, your wife said, of this much money you gave me, God willing, five thousand lira of it, three thousand, or a thousand, or ten thousand lira of it I have given to you; take it, let it be yours.

When she says that, Allah Almighty makes it lawful for you. He makes it lawful. Take it and enjoy it, He says. Enjoy it. If my wife had such a mahr, and that mahr had been given to me, of women, it says, (?) even if it were a mahr, to her, to her (?), according to the verse, I would give it back to her even without divorcing, if I had no need. That is, I would not take that either.
