Tafsir
O Habibim! O Muhammad, like the Prophets who were sent to many nations before, We have sent you as a Prophet to a nation to whom many nations have gone before them, so that you may collect in the Holy Qur'an Our Verses which We revealed to the Prophets before, and which We will reveal to you, and recite them to them.
In this verse, when it says We have sent you to a nation that many nations have passed before you, it can be misinterpreted. Attention should be paid to the exegesis of this verse, not its translation. Since there is no Turkish word for some of the verses, they may have different meanings in their opening. The opening of the meaning can be understood as if the Prophet (PBUH) came as a Prophet only to the Arab tribe and this Ummah and was not sent to other Ummahs. The Prophet (PBUH) came as a Prophet to the whole universe, man and jinn. In this respect (vema erselnake illa rahmetan lil alemindir), since all souls are indirectly from the Prophet (pbuh), all nations are from him, so when he says, "We sent him to one nation", it means that he is inclusive of all nations. In this respect, since Islam is brotherly in the eyes of Allah, Muslims at one end of the world and Muslims at the other end of the world are also brothers. And among brothers, they are one Ummah regardless of language, religion or race. All non-believers are also an ummah. The Prophet (PBUH) was sent as a Prophet to all nations, believing and non-believing.
At the beginning of the verse (that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you), the Holy Qur'an is a Book that includes the Torah, the Psalms and the Injeel, as well as all of them. Therefore, the Holy Qur'an applies to all mankind. It is Allah's infallible law on human beings. It is the constitution of human beings. Since people are free in their will, they can follow the laws of this Book or not. But for those who obey, a reward is prepared, and for those who do not, an evil abode of return.
(They deny the Merciful) means that Allah's mercy is for everyone in the universe. Even though people receive the sustenance provided by Allah, they are ungrateful by denying Allah. They associate partners with Allah and turn their backs on Him.
Say: He is my Lord). People deliberately deny Allah out of egoistic feelings. They associate shirk with Him. Remind them of Allah, the only One, and say: He is my Lord. There is no god but Him. I put my trust in Him alone and rely on Him, and to Him is the return.
What is said in the video
Look what He says in the 30th verse. O Muhammad! Thus We have sent you to a community before which many communities have come and gone, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you.
To the many nations that came and went before them, as a prophet He sends him. That is, the meaning is this. From the moment the Prophet (peace be upon him) came into the world, until the time of his prophethood, of the communities that came and went on earth, to the successors of those communities, We sent you as a prophet, He says. So what does this mean? As a mercy to the worlds, as a prophet to all humankind, he is sent. The Holy Quran, too, is revealed to all the worlds. And the Prophet: ve mâ erselnâke illâ rahmeten li'l-âlemîn. A prophet sent as a mercy to the worlds. Yes, let's read it once more, look.
The meaning is the same, I suppose, isn't it? O Muhammad! Thus We sent you, before them – before them, how shall I put it? Before us, for example. Before us – addressing the people of his time; that is, not us, assume we lived in his time. To a community before which many communities came and went, that is, to our community, that is, to the community of his own time, We sent you so that what We revealed to you, to them you may recite. Surely he is not going to recite the past. So that you explain to people what He revealed to him, that is, the Holy Quran. They deny the Most Merciful. Who are they? Idolaters.
They associate partners with Allah. Say: He is my Lord. Say to them, against them: He besides whom there is no god, the absolute owner of the worlds, the creator of the worlds, is my Lord. There is no god but Him. In Him alone I have put my trust, and the return is to Him alone.
He who brought the worlds into being from nothing, the absolute owner of these worlds, and who, for the worlds, solely so that His essence be known, created man and sent man to the unseen world and made him the vicegerent of the earth, and who wished a hidden treasure to be known – Allah Almighty, with man these worlds He honored, with man, and He willed that His essence be known. In this way Allah Almighty is informing us that there is no god other than Himself, in this way.
O My Beloved! O Muhammad! Like the prophets sent before this to many communities, thus We sent you too to a community before which many communities came and went, as a prophet, so that the verses We revealed to the earlier prophets, together with what We will reveal to you, gathered in the Holy Quran, you may recite. That is, the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel Allah Almighty has, in the Holy Quran, gathered. The four books are the Holy Quran. To the communities that came and went, according to their own condition, according to their understanding, according to their mental makeup, Allah Almighty, in accordance with the verse "What you cannot bear, We do not load on your back," to every community has sent His verses in a way it would understand.
For example, He sent the Torah to Moses. In a way they would understand. The Psalms, to people who had gone further, whose minds worked a bit more, He sent. And the Gospel He sent later, to a time when people's minds worked better. And the Prophet, at a time when reason had fully come into play, the Prophet comes into the world. Gathering the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel in the Holy Quran, he is sent as a mercy to all the worlds, as a prophet to humankind.
In this verse, in His saying "We sent you to a community before which many communities came and went," wrong meanings may arise. One must pay attention not to the translation of this verse but to its exegesis. Since for some verses there is no equivalent word in Turkish, the meanings, depending on how they are unfolded, may take on different senses. For example, here we say that a person might understand this as follows. He was sent as a prophet to other communities too. Since he was sent as a prophet to all the prophets who came and went before you, or to the peoples, is the Prophet perhaps responsible (?) Such a thought may arise in people.
What does it say in the, um...?
We sent you to a community before which many communities came and went – before which many communities came and went, We sent you. To a community where they came and went, We sent you. The verse means the community of his own time, but people may project this onto past communities as well. That is why we open this up here, so that it is understood better. Yes. In this verse, one must pay attention to the translation – to the exegesis in its exegesis. Since in some verses there is no equivalent word in Turkish, the meanings depending on how they are unfolded, may take on different senses. From the way the translation unfolds, it may also be understood as if he came as a prophet only to the Arab people and community and was not sent to other communities.
That is, as if the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent only to the Quraysh tribe, the Arab tribe, and not to other tribes – such an impression may also arise. So many meanings come out here. Meanings come out like: to past communities, only to that people. Whereas here the word has many meanings. To other communities too. How do we understand that? Thus We sent you to a community before which many communities came and went. Not "before them", but it means all the people living in the world. So if it means the people living in the world, to all the people living in the world he is sent as a mercy.
Yes. In this respect, since all souls are, indirectly, from the Prophet (peace be upon him), in his sight all communities, being from him, by saying "We sent to a community", that is, by saying "We sent to this community", all communities come to be encompassed. In this respect, since in Allah's sight Islam is brotherhood, the Muslim at one end of the world and the Muslims at the other end are brothers too. And among brothers, regardless of religion or race, they are one community. Those who do not believe, all of them too are one community. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as a prophet to all communities, believing and unbelieving.
Whether they believe or not. Since in the world both Muslims and non-Muslims live and pass on, and since he was sent as a mercy to the worlds, he was sent as a prophet to all of them. If, as some hodjas say, our Prophet were not, that is, the prophet of the others – sir, if, as he says, he had been sent only to Islam, Allah Almighty would be (?), and the non-Muslim would say: if You had sent me a prophet too, I would have obeyed him – that is, he would say this. He would say this.
And at the beginning of the verse: so that you recite to them what We revealed to you. The Holy Quran is a book that, together with the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel, contains all of these within it. So the Holy Quran applies to all people. It is Allah's unerring law over people. It is people's constitution. Since people are free in their will, the laws of this book either they follow or they do not. Because man, through the decisions he makes within his partial will, earns reward and sin. When Allah Almighty made a covenant with people at the address "Elestü bi-Rabbiküm", when He made a covenant with our souls, He wrote people's desire and wish, their aim, for them as destiny. In this case, what kind of person, by their own destiny, they are – people will not die without proving it in the world.
What does He say? Did you think that you would die without proving what kind of person you are? In this case every person, amid the blessings of this world, while making use of them, while living his life, what kind of person he is, he proves. When his life is complete – not an hour earlier, not an hour later – the command of the Truth comes to pass and the person passes on to the hereafter.
So the Holy Quran applies to all people. It is Allah's unerring law over people. It is people's constitution. Since people are free in their will, the laws of this book either they follow or they do not. But for those who follow, a reward; for those who do not, a bad abode of return has been prepared. Yes.
All people are in fact of two classes. Allah Almighty says all people, ezvaç, are of three classes.
When I say two classes, I am not opposing the verse. God forbid. I say it meaning the unbeliever and the Muslim. Within the Muslims there is one more class. Ve's-sâbikûne's-sâbikûn, ülâike'l-mukarrabûn, fî cennâti – a third group, He says, the group of the foremost, that is, the refined righteous people within Islam, and learned people, people close to the rank of the prophets. These, in this case – all ezvaç are three classes, says Allah Almighty. And He says: ve ashâbü'l-meymeneti mâ ashâbü'l-meymeneh – O you of the right, glad tidings to you; ve ashâbü'l-meş'emeti mâ ashâbü'l-meş'emeh – O you of the left, woe to you.
And the third class within Islam: ve's-sâbikûne's-sâbikûn, ülâike'l-mukarrabûn, fî cennâti'n-naîm – they are the group of the foremost, He says. The group of saints, prophets, martyrs, the martyrs. So when I say two classes, I meant the unbeliever as distinct from Islam. I meant the non-Muslim. Or rather, I mean. In this situation, on earth there is Islam and there is non-Islam, there are non-Muslims. In this case, as two classes on earth, as Muslims and non-Muslims, we live. But within Islam there is another, separate group. Who are they? The friends of Allah, the saints, sir, the group of scholars. Allah Almighty, among these scholars: the passing of your scholars to the hereafter is like the sun going and darkness coming, He says.
Yes. These scholars too will keep appearing until the Day of Judgment. As those raised by Allah Almighty, they will serve on earth. They will live their lives as heirs of the Prophet. As heirs of the Prophet. People will not be able to say, people will not be able to say, "O Allah, to other people You sent a prophet. Why did You not send us a prophet?" They will not be able to say this. For example, every 100 years Allah Almighty sent people a prophet. Between Jesus and the Prophet only some 400-odd years passed. People fell into worry: is the world – is the Last Day about to come? Well, even though 1400-odd years have passed from the Prophet to this time, if Allah Almighty does not send a prophet, isn't that an injustice to these people?
Allah, since He sent the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (peace be upon him), as the last prophet, sends in his place his heirs, the scholars. The scholars are raised by our Lord Himself and, for people, as (?) educators, as appointed ones, on earth they carry out their duty. These are the scholars. These are people who have reformed their nafs, risen to a certain rank, and by our Lord been raised. Their teacher is Allah Himself. They have no teacher on earth. Kuddusi Baba proves this with this word of his. Do not ask about the knowledge of the Sufi path, he says, from the hadith scholar or the madrasa teacher.
Ask about the knowledge of the path from the one who took it directly from (?), he says. If you say "the one who is the diver", ask the one who has dived into this sea. In case they might not grasp its meaning, of course. That one who dives into that sea, who reforms his nafs, who has become aware of the divine manifestations, and the "Râsihûn" it speaks of in verse 7 – in Surah Al Imran, the 7th verse – people kneaded with Allah's knowledge, on earth, as our Lord's very own appointed ones, as His servants, carry out their duty. They explain the verses and hadiths to people.
These people, as heirs of the Prophet, live, and in times when, of certain events the verse tells us, the miracles become manifest, a situation stronger than the miracle shown in the Prophet's time comes about. If I showed you a wonder now, you might say it is magic. For example, the Prophet shows a miracle, and "it was magic" they can say. But no rational person can call this magic: We let sweet water and salt water meet. Between them is a barrier. They never mix with each other, He says. There, at the Strait of Gibraltar. This is what Captain Cousteau found. What he shouted "I found it" about, 1400 years earlier Allah Almighty in the Holy Quran tells us. Go on now, call this magic.
Yes. The people of the Sabbath being turned into apes, their forms being changed – one of the doctors, sir, found an ape skeleton and compared it exactly with a human skeleton; that from that time, from the time of Moses, Allah Almighty turned the shape, the form of those people of the Sabbath into apes, this, thousands of years later, being found by Doctor Darbi shows us the verse's miracle. As more knowledge is discovered, Allah Almighty's miracles will appear.
His speaking of darknesses in the oceans, and their finding those dark zones in the ocean, the fish there giving off light, producing electricity – these are Allah's miracles. That is why Allah Almighty, through His scholars, the Quran's verses to people, with the miracles of the time, by showing them – that there is no god but Allah, and that salvation lies in worshipping Allah – (?).
They deny the Most Merciful. They do. Who are they? Ve ashâbü'l-meş'emeti mâ ashâbü'l-meş'emeh. O you of the left, woe to you, He said. Those who, at the address "Elestü bi-Rabbiküm", when they chose Allah Almighty, out of their selfish pride and arrogance could not submit to Allah, who waited for the Lord of their own imagination and turned their backs on Allah – with the verse in which Allah Almighty says they will not see their Lord: there is no god besides Allah for them to see as their Lord. That is, let them see what He created. These come to the earth and live out the destinies that by their own desires and wishes they had written. They deny the Most Merciful.
That is, the Most Merciful – the so many blessings Allah Almighty gave people through His attribute of mercy, these they deny, He says. They deny. His saying this: Allah Almighty's mercy is upon everyone in the universe. Although people receive the provision Allah gives, by denying Allah they are ungrateful. Associating partners with Allah, they turn their backs on Him.
Say: He is my Lord. Of course. The Lord of the worlds, not only mine. The One who created the worlds. The Lord who brings into being from nothing. The meaning of Rabb: Rabb means creator. No one, nothing other than Allah can create. This is not possible. In a verse too He says: or do you own something even the size of a seed's sprout? That is, do you possess a power (?) to bring this into being from nothing? If that were so, you would be given nothing of your world, He says. That is, if you could create something the size of a seed's sprout, bring it into being from nothing and rule over it, you would create your own needs yourself, you would not show need of Me, and I, He says, would give you nothing from My world, He says.
Yes. Well, He is my Lord. People, out of selfish feelings, knowingly deny Allah, they associate partners with Him; remind them of the One Allah – say: He is my Lord, there is no god but Him, in Him alone I have put my trust and on Him I rely, and the return will be to Allah. Every soul shall taste death and your return is to Us, says Allah Almighty.
