And at one time, they said; “Oh Allah! If this Book is from Your side, let stones rain onto us from the sky, or give us a severe punishment.”
Tafsir
The idolaters, the disbelievers, and according to one narration, Nadr ibn Hars and his followers, prayed to Allah, saying, "If this is your Book, rain stones down on us from the sky. Or give us a painful punishment. Although these people intellectually knew and understood Allah, they could not bow down to Allah because they could not compromise their own self-glory and pride, and they disregarded Allah to the point of asking for their own destruction. Allah did not destroy them for the sake of His Messenger, since among them was the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Servant of the Two Worlds, the mercy of the worlds. Nor is Allah going to kill them before they reach the end of their life span, which they have been allotted.

even so, since they would not give up the arrogant pride of their egos, they could not bow to Allah and, to the point of asking for their own destruction, they held Allah as nothing. If they had feared Allah, could someone say, "O Allah, give me calamity, give me pain, (?), give me punishment, rain stones down on me," if he knew Allah? This is not possible.
Why is it not possible? We all know Allah exists. Could you ask Allah for His own wrath, I mean? Because you fear Allah, you would not ask for it. These people too know of Allah's existence. But because they are in a state of arrogance, pride and (?) of ego toward Allah, they hold Him as nothing. And within their own world, within that circle of ignorance, according to their tiny minds they defy Allah Almighty. Yes. That is, "nothing will happen to us." They trust in their (?). They trust in their own supporters. So they take Allah lightly. Yet he does not know that He created those worlds, is the owner of everything there is, from the atom to the globe, within His power, and him too — although Allah created him, although He is such that if men and jinn gathered they could not harm Allah, even so, with that tiny mind, with pride and arrogance, (?) toward Allah.
