Translation

At one time, We Commanded to the angels: “Prostrate before Adam.” They prostrated, but Satan (Iblees) did not. He resisted.

Tafsir

Allah (swt) created the body of our ancestor Adam from mud. When He ordered the angels and Iblis to prostrate to Adam, the angels immediately did so, but only Iblis insisted. He tried to play a game of logic against Allah (swt). You created me from fire and him from mud, fire cleanses mud, but mud does not cleanse fire. Therefore, I will not prostrate to him, he insisted. Thereupon he was expelled from the presence and cursed.

When He commanded the angels and Iblis to prostrate before Adam, the angels at once fell into prostration. Only Iblis was obstinate. He tried to play a game of logic against Allah Almighty. You created me from fire, him from clay. Fire cleans clay, but clay does not clean fire. Therefore I will not prostrate before him, he said, and was obstinate.
