Translation

Then he broke them to pieces but left the greatest one so that they might consult it.

Tafsir

Hadrat Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' was looking for an opportunity to break the idols. When his people left the city on a fair day or on a festival day to meet at the place of the festival or at the fair, Hazrat Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' broke all the idols, not only the great idol. He hung the axe with which he broke the idols around the neck of the great idol.

The reason why he did not break only the great idol is that when they realize that the idols were broken by Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm', they will question Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' and he will say that if he broke the idols, it was the great idol, and of course they themselves will not believe it. Because they themselves know that they are not capable of anything. He did not break the great idol, but hung the axe around the neck of the great idol, thinking that maybe they would wise up.

What is said in the video

We have come to verse 58 of Surah Al-Anbiya.

In the end Abraham smashed them to pieces, except he left the biggest of them, so that they might turn to it, he said. Abraham (peace be upon him) was saying, this is an opportunity to break the idols. When his people left the city on a fair day or a festival day, to meet at the festival grounds or at the fair, Abraham (peace be upon him) broke all the idols; only the big idol he did not break. He also hung the axe with which he broke the idols beside the big idol. The reason he left only the big idol unbroken: when they realize the idols were broken by Abraham (peace be upon him), they will interrogate Abraham (peace be upon him), and he will say, if anyone broke the idols, this big idol broke them; and upon this, naturally, they themselves will not believe it.

Because they themselves know that they are capable of nothing. Thinking that perhaps this way they will come to their senses, he left the big idol unbroken and hung the axe around the big idol's neck.
