He said; “Perhaps it was the greatest one of them that did this. There it is, ask them if they can talk.”
Tafsir
Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) responds to his people to show their ignorance. (Maybe these elders did it. Let's ask them. If they are talking, he said). The reason why he said this is that every sane person should know that these idols, which are lifeless and have no benefit or harm even to themselves, cannot speak. Therefore, he did not break the great idol earlier to teach them a good lesson, and he left the people to understand their ignorance by leading them to the great idol.
What is said in the video
Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 63. Perhaps it was this big one of theirs who did it. Abraham now says: perhaps it was this big one of theirs who did it. He didn't break the big idol, you see, but hung the axe on its neck, and it stuck there in its neck. "Go on, ask them, if they can speak," he said. Abraham answers his people in order to expose their ignorance. Perhaps it was this big one of theirs who did it. Go on, ask them, if they can speak, he said. He said this so that everyone of sound mind would know that these lifeless idols, which can neither benefit nor harm even themselves, cannot speak. So, in order to teach these people a good lesson, he did not break the big idol as well, and by directing his people to the big idol he left it so that they would realize their ignorance.
