And as such, they tried to plot against him, but We made them suffer a greater loss.
Tafsir
When the fire was extinguished, those who saw that Hadrat Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' was safe in the midst of the fire were even more surprised when they realized that they had failed in the trap they had prepared.
Allah (swt) is talking about the trap that was prepared for Hazrat Ibrahim (Abraham). This trap was the trap of throwing Abraham into the fire. The reason why Allah (swt) calls it a trap is that many people have witnessed the audacity of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to break their idols and see for themselves that their gods could not protect them. As Allah (swt) says in the sixty-fourth verse of this Surah, "Then they turned to their own conscience and said, 'You are the wrongdoers, you are the wrongdoers.'" Although they realized that they were wrongdoers, the next verse says, "Then they returned to their former beliefs and arguments." (Then they returned to their former beliefs and arguments.) These people threw Hadrat Ibrahim 'alaihis-salâm' into the fire, justifying themselves, even though they knew that they were knowingly denying Allah. Of course, these people were motivated by their own interests and their own desires, and Allah Ta'ala told them to prepare such a trap to eliminate Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him), but Allah Ta'ala told them that it was a trap.
This is how Allah saves His Messenger and those who are with Allah, and this is how He loses those who are enemies of Allah and His Prophets.

Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 70, yes.
Thus they wanted to set a trap for them, but We made them the greater losers, it says. So, thus they wanted to set a trap for him, for Abraham (peace be upon him), but We made them the greater losers, it says.
When the fire died down, those who saw that Abraham (peace be upon him) was safe in the middle of the fire, when they saw that they had not succeeded with the trap they had prepared, were all the more bewildered. Allah Almighty speaks of the trap prepared for Abraham (peace be upon him). This trap is the trap of throwing Abraham into the fire. Allah Almighty calls this a trap because many of the people, in the face of the daring Abraham (peace be upon him) showed in breaking the idols they worshipped, saw that their gods could not preserve themselves, could not protect themselves, and witnessed it with their own eyes.
In verse 64 of this surah, as Allah Almighty says, they thereupon turned to their own consciences and said to themselves: You are the wrongdoers, you. Although they realized they were somewhat wrongdoers, in the next verse, when it says they then turned back to their old faith and disputes, even they, despite knowing they were in denial of Allah, justified themselves and threw Abraham (peace be upon him) into the fire. Of course, since these people were bound up with their own interests and selfish desires, their preparing such a trap to do away with Abraham (peace be upon him) Allah Almighty declared to people: This is a trap.
Thus Allah Almighty saves His prophets and those who are with Allah. And thus He brings loss upon those who are enemies of Allah and His prophets.
