Translation

(Remember the Prophet) Job too! (Recall) when he supplicated to his Lord, “this burden has come upon me, you are the most Merciful of the merciful ones.”

Tafsir

Allah (swt) also tested Hadrat Ayyub. Hadrat Ayyub was rich in children, wealth and property. His children and property were taken away from him to test him. It was not for the sake of children, wealth and property, but because of the discomfort of his own body, and because his wife and those around him urged him to pray to Allah (swt), he felt ashamed and presented his case to Allah (swt). This was because Hadrat Ayyub 'alaihis-salâm knew that Allah is aware of his condition. Therefore, he was ashamed to ask Allah to pray for him. Finally, he presented his case to Allah. He said, 'O Allah, You are aware of my situation, You are the most merciful of the merciful.

It is narrated that Hadrat Ayyub 'alaihis-salâm' used to worship and give thanks a lot. Then the angel was jealous of Hadrat Ayyub and said that he was thankful because he had wealth and property, children and well-being. He asked Allah for permission to test him. Allah gave him the permission he asked for. Then, while Hadrat Ayyub (as) was worshipping, the angel approached him from his left side and blew on him. When the angel's breath covered Hazrat Ayyub, all his skin became infected with a disease and he became sore. He also became afflicted with internal diseases. Thereupon, his friends and his wife asked him to pray to Allah (swt). Hadrat Ayyub 'alaihis-salâm said, "I have been in abundance for eighty years, it has not been that long that I have fallen into distress and have been afflicted with this problem, so I should ask Allah for health and well-being.

Verse 83 of Surah Al-Anbiya: Remember Job, too. When he called upon his Lord: this affliction has befallen me, You are the Most Merciful of the merciful — so he had pleaded. Allah Almighty tested Job (peace be upon him) as well. Job (peace be upon him) was, it is said, someone rich in the children and wealth he had been given. To test him, his children and wealth are taken from him. Not to be given children and wealth, but because of the illness of his own body, as a result of being pressed by those around him and his wife to pray to Allah Almighty, he, ashamed, laid his state before Allah Almighty.

Because Job (peace be upon him) knew that Allah was aware of his state. For this reason he felt too shy to pray to Allah for himself. Finally he lays his state before Allah Almighty. He said: O my Allah, You are aware of my state; You are the Most Merciful of the merciful. It is narrated that Job (peace be upon him) worshipped much and was thankful. Thereupon the Accursed one envied Job (peace be upon him): he gives thanks because he has wealth and property, children and family — so he said. Today non-Muslims, too, in the face of much justice, at people's upright stance, say: he has this, so he does it for that; he has that, so he does it for this. Yet they do not know it comes from his faith, from leaning his back on Allah.

He asked Allah for permission to test him. And Allah gave the Accursed one the permission he asked for. Thereupon, while Job (peace be upon him) was worshipping, the Accursed one approaches from his left side and blows on him. When the Accursed one's breath covered Job, all his skin was infected with a disease and became sores. He himself also fell ill with internal diseases. Thereupon those around him and his wife ask him to pray to Allah Almighty. Job (peace be upon him), however, says: I lived eighty years in plenty; my falling into straits and suffering this affliction has not yet lasted so long that I should ask Allah for health and well-being, he says.

Do you see the faith? This is faith. A prophet says: I lived eighty years in plenty. When I fall into straits, shall I immediately turn to Allah? I have not been in straits that long, he says. Yes.
