Al-Anbya 87: (Remember) (Dhun’nuun - Of Dolphin) Jonah too! He went away in anger and thought that We would never impose (Our Command) on him. (Remember) (Dhun’nuun - Of Dolphin) Jonah too! He went away in anger and thought that We would never impose (Our Command) on him. Then, in the darkness, he called (to Us), “There is no God but You. I exalt you above all incompletenesses. Verily, I committed oppression against my own-self (my nafs).”

Tafsir

Zunnun means the owner of the fish. Hazrat Yunus aleyhisselâm, although he conveyed the Truth to the people of Nineveh, he angrily left his people who would not come to their senses. In this case, Allah (swt) said, "Did I send you as a Prophet so that you would go away from your people?" and threw him into the sea. In the meantime, a large fish swallowed him and he remained in the belly of the fish in the darkness for four hours or three days according to the narration. Then he said, "I have wronged my soul, forgive me," and Allah (swt) forgave Hazrat Yunus. Hazrat Yunus also returned to his people.

Hadrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm' gave many advice to his people before he left them. When his people did not listen to him, he left them in a rage. He thought that by leaving his people, Allah (swt) would not press him and force him to fulfill his duty. Unfortunately, it did not turn out as he thought, and before he had a chance to leave his people, Allah pressed him and the following incident occurred.

Hazrat Yunus left his people and boarded a ship carrying passengers on the Tigris to leave them. The ship became unsteady in the middle of the water. Meanwhile, the captain of the ship said there is a criminal among us. He said, "Let's draw lots and throw him into the sea. They drew lots, and the lot went to Hadrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm'. Hazrat Yunus said, "Yes, I am the guilty one. Because I abandoned my duty before Allah's command on me expired, that is, before the time of death came, and he threw himself into the sea. In the meantime, a big fish swallowed him and he stayed in the belly of the fish in darkness for an estimated four hours or three days. Then he said, "There is no God but You. He says, "You are Subhan, I have wronged my own soul, so really I have been one of the wrongdoers by abandoning my duty.

What is said in the video

Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 87. And mention Dhun-Nun, that is, Jonah, too. Jonah (peace be upon him), the blessed one – what miracles Allah Almighty lets him live through, what He creates for His prophets! Yes. He had gone away in anger, thinking that We would never constrain him. Finally, in the darkness: there is no god but You. Glory be to You. Truly, I have been one of the wrongdoers, he prayed. The fish swallowed him; according to one narration, in its belly. Lâ ilâhe illâ ente sübhâneke innî küntü mine'z-zâlimîn. O Allah, besides whom there is no god, I have wronged myself, forgive me, he says.

Dhun-Nun means "the one of the fish". Jonah (peace be upon him), although he had conveyed the truth to his people, the family, the inhabitants of Nineveh, left in anger from among his people, who would just not come onto the right path. Thereupon Allah Almighty, saying: "Did I send you as a prophet so that you would go away from your people?", cast him into the sea. Meanwhile a big fish swallowed him, and in the darkness, according to the narration, in the belly of the fish, for either four hours or about three days he stayed. Then, as he said "I have wronged myself, forgive me", Allah Almighty forgave Jonah (peace be upon him).

And Jonah returned to his people.

Allah Almighty says in a verse: Had I not been bearing witness together with you, you would have stayed in the belly of that fish until the Day of Judgment, He says. Before Jonah (peace be upon him) left his people, he gave his people much advice. When his people did not listen to him, he left them in full fury. In leaving his people, he assumed that Allah Almighty would not constrain him, would not force him to fulfil his duty. Unfortunately, it did not turn out as he thought; before he even had the chance to leave his people, Allah constrained him, and the event we will relate below came about.

Jonah leaves his people and, in order to abandon them, on the bank of the Tigris he boarded a ship carrying passengers. In the middle of the water, the ship came to a standstill. Meanwhile the ship's captain said: There is a culprit among us. Let us draw lots; whoever it falls on, let us throw him into the sea. They draw lots, and the lot falls on Jonah (peace be upon him). And Jonah says: Yes, I am the culprit, because before Allah's, Allah's command over me was fulfilled, that is, before the time of death came, I abandoned my duty, and he lets himself into the sea. Meanwhile a big fish swallows him and, presumably, for either four hours or about three days he stays in the belly of the fish, in the darkness.

Thereupon: there is no god but You. You are glorified. I have wronged my own self. That is, truly, by abandoning my duty I have become one of the wrongdoers, he says. Yes.
