Translation

Upon this, We saved him and his family, with the exception of his wife; she was among those who stayed behind (and were destroyed).

Tafsir

Although Hadrat Lut (peace be upon him) warned his people, they continued to be unruly. They exceeded the limits set by Allah in order to satisfy their desires. When they disobeyed Allah, Hadrat Lut 'alaihis-salâm' prayed to Allah (swt), 'O Lord, save me and my family from the hands of these unruly and perverse people and do not hold me to account for what they have done.

Thereupon Allah saved Lot and his family and ordered them to leave the town. Except for the wife of Hadrat Lot. Because this woman was also of the opinion of the perverted people, and although she was the wife of Hadrat Lot, she did not follow Hadrat Lot. In this respect, the wife of Hadrat Lot (peace be upon him) was one of those who were left behind (among those who were tormented), because she was a disbeliever and a rebel in her covenant with Allah (swt) and her desire and will was destined for her.

People like the wife of Prophet Lot or the son of Prophet Noah, those who have made a bad covenant with Allah and disbelieved in Allah before, even if they are the wives or sons of Prophets, they will never benefit themselves.

Verse 57 of Surah An-Naml, a wrongly rendered verse; let us look at it, where is the mistake? Mehmet's (?) Surah An-Naml Its mistake, let us look at it.

Surah An-Naml, verse 57

Yes: "Thereupon We saved him and his family, except his wife; We decreed that she would remain among those left behind to suffer the punishment," it says. Now, when it says "We decreed", it is as if Allah Almighty put whom He wished into paradise and whom He did not wish into hell; like this, it implies that Allah Almighty takes away man's will and exercises it over man — that is what it means. Whereas what do we say here? "Thereupon We saved him and his family, except his wife; she was among those who remained behind to suffer the punishment." She was among those who remained. That is, among the people who rebelled against Allah, the people who did not know Allah — she was among those who remained.

Although, being his family, she set out on the road for Lot's sake, that calamity caught her too. Yes.

Although Lot (peace be upon him) warned his people, his people continued in their insolence. To satisfy the desires of their nafs, they transgressed the limits set by Allah. As they defied Allah, Lot (peace be upon him) prayed to Allah Almighty. "O Lord, save me and my family from the hands of these insolent and perverse people, and do not hold me accountable for what they do," he said. Why does he say that? Because he was appointed as prophet to that people. Of course — now, I will appoint you as manager of a factory. Of a factory. I will carry on with my unruliness in the factory.

What does the person who appointed you there think? He could not do this duty. He falls into thoughts like: he could not set them right. So Lot, in the One who sent him to that people, in his Lord, takes refuge and presents his situation. "You know too, my Lord, that You are capable of everything, and although You know us in the best way, yet I could not make this people understand. Save me from the hands of this people and do not hold me to account, for I did not commit (?) in the duty You gave me, my Allah," he says. What does he say? "O Lord, from the hands of these insolent and perverse people save me and my family, and do not hold me accountable for what they do," he said.

Thereupon Allah Almighty saved Lot and his family and commanded them to leave the town. Only the wife of Lot (peace be upon him) was excepted. Because this woman too held the view of the perverse people, and although she was the wife of Lot (peace be upon him), she did not follow Lot (peace be upon him). In this respect, since the wife of Lot (peace be upon him), in her covenant with Allah Almighty, gave her pledge as denial and (?), and since her own wish and desire became her destiny, this woman too was decreed to be among those left behind who were destroyed.

The wife of Lot (peace be upon him), according to one narration, when the angels came to Lot, immediately goes to that people: "To Lot very beautiful guests have come," she says. Upon her complaint, the leading men of his people try to take the angels away from Lot. Thereupon Lot says: if only I had a strong fortress to take refuge in. "This is a hard day for me," he says. Well, people like the wife of Lot (peace be upon him) or the son of Noah (peace be upon him), those who make a bad covenant with Allah Almighty and who denied Allah from the beginning — even if they are the wives or sons of prophets, they can never gain any benefit for themselves.
