Translation

Fearing that Pharaoh and his people would torture them, with the exception of a group of youths, no one believed in Moses from his people. (This is) because Pharaoh was showing arrogance on earth and he was among the transgressors.

Tafsir

In the face of the miracle shown by Allah to Moses, a group of young men from the Jewish tribe followed Moses, regardless of the torture that Pharaoh and his people would inflict on them.

In the time of Pharaoh, the Jews resided in Egypt. Pharaoh treated the Jews differently from his own subjects. Pharaoh and his people used to use the Jews for all kinds of hard labor and torture them. With the Prophethood of Hazrat Moses and the miracle that Allah gave to Hazrat Moses, the Jews took decisions among themselves. They said that they had nothing to lose by believing in Allah, the One and only God, and they believed in Hazrat Musa 'alaihis-salâm'. They comforted Hazrat Musa by telling him that they had nothing to lose between being persecuted by Pharaoh and being persecuted by believing in Hazrat Musa. They also assure their Prophet that they believe in one God.

The reason for the Jewish people's fear of Pharaoh and his subjects was that all the power of the land was under the command of Pharaoh and the Jews were in captivity in Egypt, so they had no power to stand against Pharaoh.

The Pharaoh, claiming to be a god on earth, told his subjects that there was no other god but me. I am your god. His subjects worshipped Pharaoh, either out of fear or in reality, seeing him as the chief god. In this respect, they did not believe in the Prophethood of Prophet Moses and in Allah, the One and only God. That is why Pharaoh became the transgressor on earth and his people, by following him, became the people who transgressed the limits set by Allah.

(?) will not be found. In verse 83 Allah Almighty says: “Because they fell into fear that Pharaoh and his people would torture them, none of his people but a group of young people believed in Moses. For Pharaoh was one of those who acted arrogantly on earth and transgressed bounds.” Yes.

So, fearing that Pharaoh and his people would torture them, (?) his people. Here the letter that the Prophet showed, sent to the kings by a messenger, sent with messengers, comes to my mind.

By envoys, that is, by messengers, to the kings. “Ene Muhammed,” he says. “The Messenger of Allah.

I am charged with conveying Allah's command to you,” he says.

“If you are honoured with the religion of Islam, if you accept Islam, your subjects too, seeing you, (?) they too become Muslims, and you receive two rewards,” he says. You receive two rewards. If not, if one is stubborn and does not enter the religion of Islam — “if you go on with your life as (?),” he says, “your people too,” he says, “fear you. And those who would enter Islam,” he says, “because they do not enter Islam, their burden you will bear too. You incur two sins,” he says. So here too, this verse indeed — the letter the Prophet sent to the kings with these messengers — how well it supports it. Because they fell into fear that Pharaoh and his people would torture them, none of his people but a group of young people believed in Moses.

They were afraid. Otherwise they did believe, that is. They believed that the miracle shown by Jesus and Moses was true. But they are afraid of Pharaoh. For Pharaoh was one of those who acted arrogantly on earth and transgressed bounds. That is, the one who declared himself a god. In the face of the miracle Moses showed from Allah, of the Jewish people a group of young people, regardless of the torture Pharaoh and his people would inflict on them, followed Moses. In Pharaoh's time the Jews could not reside in Egypt. In Pharaoh's time the Jews were residing in Egypt. The secret of this too: together with Joseph (peace be upon him), Jacob (peace be upon him) When Joseph, as a slave, was brought to Egypt, Pharaoh's vizier buys Joseph.

There are many events. After these events he becomes treasurer of Egypt. And together with Pharaoh, taking his permission too, he has his father, that is, Jacob (peace be upon him), brought to Egypt, and since that time they lived in Egypt. Those tribes, the Jewish tribe, lived in Egypt. Yes. In the face of the miracle Moses showed from Allah, a group of young people of the Jewish people, regardless of the torture Pharaoh and his people would inflict on them, followed Moses. In Pharaoh's time the Jews resided in Egypt. Pharaoh treated the Jews differently from his own subjects. Over time the Pharaohs looked down on the Jews and placed on them the heaviest duties in Egypt.

Making them clean the sewers, working them like slaves. Then they brought them to a state where even the wages they received could not cover their living. Pharaoh and his people used the Jews for every kind of heavy work and tortured them. With the prophethood of Moses and the miracle Allah gave Moses, the Jews make decisions among themselves. Saying that in faith in the one Allah and in believing in Moses they had nothing to lose, they believe in Moses (peace be upon him).

Between suffering oppression from Pharaoh and suffering oppression for believing in Moses they have nothing to lose, they tell Moses, and so they console him. They also assure their prophet that they believe in the one Allah. That is, Moses grieves for his people. “Because I caused Pharaoh to torture you in this way” — he sees himself as guilty. But by telling Allah's verses he of course fulfils that duty. Toward his people — “I wonder, by fulfilling this duty, will my people blame me?” — this grief of his, his people put into words: “Do not grieve. Between the oppression Pharaoh has done to us or the oppression he will do now there is no difference.

We are already living in oppression,” they say. “We believed in you. We believed in the one Allah,” they say. And they console Moses.

The reason the Jewish people feared Pharaoh and his subjects: since all the power of the land was at Pharaoh's command, since the Jews were in captivity in Egypt, they had no power in their hands to stand against Pharaoh.

Pharaoh, playing god on earth, to his subjects: “For you, another god besides me I do not see.”

Now, as I always say, there is one more behaviour and so on. I cannot pass it by without telling it here. I always tell it, you know, but some repetitions are nice too. One day Satan comes and knocks on Pharaoh's door. Pharaoh's door. Pharaoh calls from inside. “Who is it?” he says. Now Satan calls from outside. “How can you claim to be a god? You don't even know who is at your door, who comes to your door,” he says. “Who are you? Come inside,” he says. Satan: “For a god like you,” he says, “an advisor like me is very nice,” he says, “it suits you. So let me be an advisor to (?),” he says. That is the story of Satan and Pharaoh.

Yes. And it says: Pharaoh, playing god on earth, to his subjects: “For you, besides me I see no other god. Your god,” he said. His subjects, either out of fear or truly seeing Pharaoh as the god over them, him they worshipped. For this reason they did not believe in Moses' prophethood or in the (?) Allah. It is because of this that Pharaoh transgressed bounds on earth, and his people, by following him, came to be people who overstep the (?) that Allah has set.
