Translation

With the exception of people of Jonah (The Prophet), if only there had been a nation (of the ones that We destroyed), who would believe (before punishment came to them) and whose faith would benefit them. When Jonah’s people believed, We alleviated their despicableness in this worldly life and provided them with benefits for some time.

Tafsir

The people of Hadrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm' were among those who rebelled against him and Allah. When Hadrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm' told his people about the torment to come, it did not help them. So Hadrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm' became angry with his people and left them. After this separation, when the people of Hadrat Yunus felt that the punishment that had been foretold to them was coming, they believed. They believed in Allah and the Prophet. So Allah removed from them the calamities that were to befall them.

If only the other tribes had believed before the torment came, their faith would have benefited them. The people of Hazrat Yunus 'alaihis-salâm' felt that the punishment was coming, so they believed and were saved from disgrace. The meaning of Allah (swt) disgracing people is that He humbles them, because of their denial of the truth, and that these people become small and lose their personalities because they tell lies in the face of the truth. It is also the transformation of their forms into other creatures.

What is said in the video

What does our daughter Selin say? Volume 3, page 1325, verse 98. Except the people of Jonah. Of the lands whose people We destroyed, if only the people of any land had, before the punishment came to them, believed, so that their faith would have benefited them. When the people of Jonah believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world. And We let them enjoy the blessings of the world for a while.

Here there is a subtle point. Let us explain it to you. This subtle point. After that, let us continue with the tafsir.

Except the people of Jonah, He says. Why are the people of Jonah, the people, excepted from these? That is, when we say from these: a punishment that would come upon them is withheld, and that punishment is postponed, and they do not suffer punishment. The only reason: the prophets of the destroyed peoples did not leave their peoples until they were destroyed. They told them the truth. When they finally overstepped the limit, Allah Almighty took His prophet and those who believed in that prophet out from among them, and that town, that people He destroyed. The people of Jonah are an exception to this.

The reason: this time the prophet Jonah left his people. If the people of Jonah had not believed in Jonah, and Jonah had remained among that people, that people would not have escaped destruction either. But since Allah Almighty sent the prophets to make the truth heard by their people, Jonah, without receiving an order from our Lord, left his people. Shall I entrust the truth, he says, to people like you who don't understand words? He goes away from his people. And Allah Almighty: Did I send you to them as a prophet so that you would go away from your people? He says. Fleeing from his people, he boards a ship.

A ship. These are the wisdoms of Allah Almighty. The ship is caught by a huge wave. It becomes necessary to unload its cargo. Lots are drawn among the people; it falls to Jonah.

They throw Jonah into the sea. A fish (?) him. That's what they call the Yunus fish.

Forty days, forty days he travels in the sea, then he becomes unwell. In the end he makes this prayer: Lâ ilâhe illâ ente sübhâneke innî küntü mine'z-zâlimîn My Lord, I have wronged myself, forgive me, he says. He understands the situation. Allah Almighty has him brought out onto land.

Unconscious, (?) sick. While he lies on the ground, Allah Almighty makes a large-leaved plant of the gourd kind grow at his head. He makes it give him shade. Then He sends him back to his people. And his people believe in Jonah, they believe. So Allah Almighty says: the people of Jonah are excepted. That is the exception: until the peoples of the other prophets were destroyed, the prophets stayed among those peoples, whereas Jonah, without receiving an order from Allah Almighty, left his people. So for that people the coming punishment is postponed. If only the people of any land had believed, had believed before the punishment came to them, so that their faith would have benefited them, like the people of Jonah.

And it is even shown as an example. The people of Jonah. When Jonah returns to his people, they believe, and the destruction that was to come to them is lifted. When the people of Jonah believed, the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world We removed from them. What is disgrace? The turning of the people of the Sabbath into the form of apes.

And when they did not believe in Jesus either, their
