Translation

Do not leave Allah and worship things that cannot benefit or harm you. If you do this, you will surely be among the oppressors.

Tafsir

This verse, like the verse above, appears to be addressed to the Prophet (PBUH), but in fact it is addressed to human beings. Humans worship the idols they have made as gods, by making the materials, which are the creations of Allah, comprehensive with their hands. In their minds, the spirit of Allah enters into the idols they have made with their hands, and they worship the spirit of Allah within the idol, not the idol they have sculpted. Their excuses are greater than their misdemeanors. Because Allah is free from time and space. Allah (swt) is also free from any particular attribute. In this case, the spirit of which invented god enters into the shapes they make with their hands and they worship it as a god. This is both a great sin and ignorance.

Allah (swt) addresses the Prophet (s.a.w.) as if He is addressing him, but in fact He is addressing mankind; O mankind! Do not associate partners with Allah in worshipping that which can neither benefit you nor harm you, then you will be among the wrongdoers and you will be an enemy to your own soul.

What is said in the video

Surah Yunus, verse 106: "Do not, leaving Allah, worship things that will neither benefit nor harm you." How beautiful this is in a figurative sense. Would He ever say this to the Prophet?

We say it to people. We say it to people whose nafs has not reached perfection. Do not, leaving Allah, worship things that will neither benefit nor harm you. Into the idols you made with your own hands, shaping the materials Allah created, bringing the spirit of the Lord of your imagination, putting it inside — do not worship what you made up as religion by your own mind. If you do this, then you will surely be among the wrongdoers. Among the wrongdoers. That is, "zalim," as we understand it — that is, as the general public understands it — is a person who wrongs another: a wrongdoer. Even though it is in this sense — suppose I am a wrongdoer, Allah forbid, I wrong people.

One person, two, three, ten, fifty, a hundred people. Those who cross my path. Those who escape me get away. They get away. But I keep on wronging. So the real wrongdoer is to oneself — to my own nafs, my own nafs. You suffer from me for two hours, three hours, five hours, a day, ten days, or (?), a few months of wrong. Then I, out of my own nafs, toward eternal punishment, by daring to leave you exposed to it, will have wronged myself. And I will have become the real wrongdoer. So whoever turns his face to anyone other than Allah becomes one of the real wrongdoers, those who have wronged their own nafs.

Yes.

Otherwise, when He says "you will be among the wrongdoers," it is not the person in the world who swings a sword, kills people, does (?), and lives like a lord himself. Even within the lordly living of the transient world, he will wrong his own nafs; and "We bring those criminals, where they are, to the highest station so that they prove themselves with their wrongdoing." So that they prove what kind of people they are. In wrongdoing. Yes.

So it is not in the sense these people understand right away. When He says "you will be among the wrongdoers," it does not mean a person who wrongs others. Yes. That is also the outward meaning. But the true inner meaning is a person's wronging his own nafs. In this verse, like the verse above, although it appears to address the Prophet (peace be upon him), it is actually people. People, shaping with their hands the materials Allah created, worship the idols they made as gods. In their own minds, Allah's spirit having entered the idols they made with their hands, they supposedly worship not their carved and shaped idols but, within them, Allah's spirit.

Their excuse is worse than their fault. Because Allah is free from time and place. Allah Almighty is also free from any particular attribute. In this case, which made-up god's spirit, entering the shapes they made with their hands, do they worship as a god? This is both a great sin and ignorance itself. With His verses, which Allah Almighty speaks as if addressing the Prophet (peace be upon him), He actually addresses people: O people, do not, worshipping things that will give you neither any benefit nor any harm, associate partners with Allah, then you will be wrongdoers, you will have acted as an enemy to your own nafs, He decrees.

At the end, look, we mark it: you will have acted as an enemy to your own nafs.
