Despite this, they said what the ones from the past had said.
Tafsir
In addition to the fact that Allah (swt) has thus pressed those who disbelieve in Allah and the Hereafter with His knowledge and proved their existence intellectually by the calamities He has given them so that they may come to their senses, those who disbelieve in Allah have said the same thing as the ancients or the people who perished.
However, Allah inevitably appeals to the mind and wants people to live in glory and honor without any hardship and to lead a peaceful life free from calamities. In this respect, He sent them the Qur'an, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and Islam as a religion. Yet these people continued to disbelieve in Allah. They hid the truth or continued to rebel against Allah out of their stubbornness and said as the ancients said. They said these are the tales of the ancients.
What is said in the video
Verse 81, of Surah Al-Mu'min, of Surah Al-Mu'minun, the 81st verse: "Despite this, they said as those before them said," it says. Despite what? We explained it in our earlier lessons too. Although Allah Almighty, with all His knowledge, proved His own Self with verses, they still did not believe in Allah. They turned their backs on Allah. And Allah Almighty destroyed some peoples as a lesson. Even though they were destroyed, even though little time had passed over those peoples, they again began to follow the ways of their old forefathers. In response, Allah Almighty says: how they resembled their forefathers!
Yes. Despite this, they said as those before them said. What did they say? In the other verse, actually, they resembled their forefathers. Here, they said as those before them said. What did they say? We found our forefathers on this path. What path was that? The idolaters' path. The path of worshipping idols. We found them on this. Yes. Besides Allah Almighty thus cornering with His knowledge those who deny Allah and the hereafter, and, so they would come to their senses, through the calamities He gave them, rationally proving His existence, those who deny Allah, exactly as the ancients or the destroyed peoples denied, so they spoke.
Yet Allah, unavoidably, by addressing reason, His existence to people, without placing any burden on them, wants them to live in their glory and honor, far from calamities, and to spend a life in peace. For this reason He sent them the Quran, the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (peace be upon him), and Islam as the religion. But these people still kept on denying Allah. They hid the truths, or out of their stubbornness continued to rebel against Allah, and said as the ancients said. They said: these are the fables of the ancients.
Yes. With words like "the fables of the ancients" or "We found our forefathers on this path", they turned their backs on Allah.
