Translation

At one time, We gave Moses forty nights at Tur-Sinai for revelations. After he went there, you accepted the calf as your deity. With this action, you became oppressors.

Tafsir

Hazrat Moses puts his brother Aaron in charge of his people and goes to Mount Tur. He stayed on the mountain for forty days and nights. While Hazrat Musa was on the mountain, his people did not listen to Hazrat Aaron. A Copt named Samir'i collects gold from those around him, makes a calf out of gold, and by making the calf make a sound, he tells the people there that this is your god and Moses' god. The people there worshipped this calf. Even though Hazrat Aaron tried to convince his people, they would not stop worshipping the calf. When Hazrat Moses came among his people forty days later and saw them worshipping the calf, he grabbed his brother's beard and asked him what is this? His brother said, "O son of my mother! Even though I told them that what you are doing is shirk, they did not listen to me. He complained to Hazrat Moses. Then Moses turned to his people and said to them, "You have wronged your souls by worshipping the calf.

Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 51. And when We appointed forty nights for Moses on Mount Sinai for revelation. After he went to Sinai, you took the calf as a god and in this state you became wrongdoers.

Moses puts his brother Aaron at the head of his people and climbs Mount Sinai; he stays on the mountain forty days and nights. While Moses is on the mountain, his people do not listen to Aaron. Who is Aaron? Moses' elder brother; he too is a prophet. Moses, while passing through that desert of Tih, with his children, at night, in the desert sees the Essence of Allah Almighty in the form of a fire. When he comes near it, he sees all kinds of strange (?), and from that fire: O Moses, come near, I am your Lord, He says. Moses is afraid and runs away. As he runs: Stop, O Moses. I truly am your Lord, He says, and he turns back.

I will send you to Pharaoh, He says. And Moses says: My Lord, I have a lisp, I cannot speak well, and I have also killed a man; give me my brother Aaron as a helper too. And Allah Almighty gives him, Aaron, as a helper to Moses. We will come to these verses further. So when Moses went up Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, he left his people to his brother Aaron. And his people do not listen to Aaron. Among them a gypsy called Samiri collects the gold and jewellery they had on them from them. He makes a calf that can low in the wind. He says: This is your god. Moses is looking for god in the wrong place, he says.

Upon this, they again worship the calf. Despite seeing so many miracles.

After they worship this calf, Moses comes down from the mountain with the Ten Commandments. And he sees that they are worshipping the calf. At once he seizes Aaron, his elder brother, by the beard. Aaron says: Stop, O son of my mother. They did not listen to me. Whatever I did, they did not listen, he says. Upon this, when Moses turns back to his people, he explains the situation, and they realise they were wrong and repent again. Yes.

O son of my mother, although I told them that what you are doing is shirk, they did not listen to me, he complained to Moses. Upon this, Moses turned to his people and told them: By worshipping the calf you have become of those who wrong their own selves. Yes.
