Translation

Opposing the word, those oppressors changed the word they were ordered to obey. We brought down from the sky torment upon those oppressors for the bad things they were doing.

Tafsir

What our Lord means by those who do wrong is the oppression of one's own soul by disobeying the command of Allah (swt).

They changed the word they were commanded to say. As they entered the gates of the city, they made a mockery of the verse that says, "Say hitta", which means "repent to your Lord and give thanks".

They changed it to hinta, which means wheat, as in "see us, watch over us, protect us, we will not listen to you". This action of this people increased their injustice to their own souls. In retaliation for their mockery and insult, our Lord destroyed that people by sending down torment on them from the sky.

Whoever disobeys the command of Allah, Allah will not be humbled. Those who disobey Allah's commands are those who wrong their own souls and seek Allah's punishment.

Allah (swt) does not intend cruelty to the worlds, every soul is cruel to its own soul. Allah Almighty says in one of His Verses (Fa man ya'mel miskala zerratin fan yerah. And man ya'mel miskala zerratin sharran yerah), a miskal of good and a miskal of evil that you have done will be written down. He says in another verse that what you earn is the reward of your two hands.

What is said in the video

To verse 59 of Surah Al-Baqarah: Those who did wrong, who are these wrongdoers? Those who wronged their own selves. That is, those who, by going against Allah's command, will leave their own selves in the hereafter exposed to the punishment of hell, changed the word they were commanded with. Which one? They changed the word 'hitta'; and upon those wrongdoers We — who are these wrongdoers? Those who wronged their own selves — upon those wrongdoers — for they cannot do wrong to Allah — as a return for the fisq they committed, since they were in fisq, that is, in traits that would drown the earth in corruption and be a bad example to humanity, trait upon trait, from the sky We sent down a punishment, it says.

Upon them, in return for that fisq. We will also describe the punishment. What our Lord means by 'those who did wrong': going against Allah Almighty's command, it is the wrong people have done to their own selves.

They changed the word they were commanded with. When going in through the gate of the city, say 'hitta'. That is, your Lord's, repent to your Lord. Give thanks: they changed this word, mocking it. What is it? 'Hitta': thanks be to Allah, in that sense. In the sense of repentance. Sir, repent. Give thanks: they changed this word, mocking it. You see us, watch over us, protect us: look at the shameless ones. Look at the words, the words. They are saying this to Allah. You see us, watch over us, protect us, we won't listen to you. Let them say 'hinta', which means wheat. 'Hinta' instead of 'hitta'.

They turned it into 'hinta'. Such actions of this people, to the wrongs against their own selves, added more. In return for the mockery and conduct they directed at Allah Almighty, in return for the insult, our Lord, sending down a punishment upon them from the sky, destroyed that people.

Whoever goes against Allah's command, with the punishment he has asked of Allah, wrongs his own self.

I say: O people, all of us are travellers in this world.

During this journey, to follow the one who shows us the way we are obliged. Our Lord, with His verse, has sent us the Holy Quran until the Day of Judgment, before us as a leader, as a light. Within the leadership and light of this Holy Quran, we must advance on this path; we are obliged to. If we step outside it, we sink into darkness and swamps, and wrong our own selves. Look, what beautiful examples there are here.
