Al-Hijr 81: And We had given to them Our miracles. But they turned away from these.

Translation

And We had given to them Our miracles. But they turned away from these.

Tafsir

When the people of Thamud said to their Prophet Salih, show us a miracle so that we may believe in you, Prophet Salih prayed to Allah. Allah (swt) brought out a camel from the rock. Prophet Salih told his people that this camel was the camel of Allah, that it would graze in every pasture, drink water from every spring, and that no one would touch it, but they killed it by cutting off its legs. They turned away from the miracles that Allah showed to this people and they perished.

In verse 81, Allah Almighty says: We had given them Our miracles, but they turned away from them. They turned away.

This people, this people did not believe the prophet Salih: "If you are a prophet, let Allah," it says, "bring a yellow camel out of this rock for us," it says, a yellow camel. Allah Almighty says: so We fulfilled what they wanted, We gave it. (?) When they said to their prophet Salih, "Show us a miracle so that we believe in you," the prophet Salih prays to Allah, and Allah Almighty brings a camel out of the rock. The prophet Salih told his people: this camel is Allah's camel. It will graze in every pasture, drink from every spring, no one shall touch it — despite his saying this, they cut its legs and killed the camel.

So from the miracles Allah had shown this people, this people too turned their faces away and were destroyed.

They also asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) for many miracles. But when the Prophet, as was needed, showed miracles, he truly spread the religion of Islam with these miracles. For destruction has been lifted; there are calamities. As for the earlier peoples, when they asked for miracles, Allah Almighty would show these peoples a miracle. If they did not believe in this miracle, that people would be destroyed. The reason is that they took Allah Almighty lightly. What you asked of Allah — your Lord gave you this miracle. Now, when you ought truly to believe in it, if you go and betray it, of course Allah Almighty will not leave this unanswered.
