Translation

What they were earning before, could not save them from the suffering.

Tafsir

No matter what man earns in this world, he cannot transfer an iota of it to the Hereafter. Because the heavens and the earth and all that is between them belongs to Allah. Allah will inherit them all. Therefore, in order for a person to transfer something from this world to the Hereafter, he must believe in Allah and the Hereafter, and what he spends in the way of Allah will benefit him and he will be able to transfer something to the Hereafter. In addition, those who rebel against Allah, who do not believe in Allah and the Hereafter, then when they pass on to the Hereafter, even if they have done good deeds in this world, their good deeds will not be able to ward off the punishment of Allah in the Hereafter.

Now I will open verse 84. Our child Osman Batur can also ask his question.

What they had been earning did not ward off any harm from them. It says: whatever a person earns in this world, if, apart from Allah's verses, whatever he earned, since all of it is Allah's creation, nothing can protect those people. Yes, may many kiss your hand, my child. However much a person earns in this world, he cannot carry a single atom of it to the hereafter. Because the heavens and the earth and what is between them belong to Allah. The inheritance of all of it will remain with Allah. So, for a person to carry a little from this world to the hereafter: by believing in Allah and the hereafter, what they (?) in Allah's way will benefit them in the hereafter; they will have carried some things across.

To the hereafter. Apart from this, those who rebel against Allah, who do not believe in Allah and the hereafter, in this case, when they pass to the hereafter, even if they did good deeds in the world, these good deeds will not be able to ward off Allah's punishment from them in the hereafter. Yes.
