Translation

(Zachary) said; “Oh My Dear Lord, while my wife is barren and while I have reached the limit of old age, how can I have a son?”

Tafsir

When Allah (swt) gave Zakariyya 'alaihis-salâm' the good news of Yahya 'alaihis-salâm' as a son, Zakariyya 'alaihis-salâm' was both astonished and pleaded with Allah (swt) to find out the truth of the matter. (He said, 'Lord, how can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached the last limit of old age? The last limit of old age here means that Zakariyya 'alaihis-salâm', with the weakness and infirmity of old age, and his wife Iysa, although she was both old and barren, was given the good news of a son, and she made such a supplication to Allah (swt) in order to learn the truth of the matter, that is, in order to be convinced that the revelation that came to her was merciful. He said, "How can he be my son?

He was waiting for an answer from Allah (swt) that he would have a son. That is why he made this supplication to Allah (swt). Of course, Zakariyya 'alaihis-salâm' also knows very well that when Allah wills something, He simply says, "Be". In other words, He fulfills His will. Allah (swt) is free from deficient attributes and He is All-knowing. When Allah promises something or says something, He fulfills it. In one of His verses, He says, "Whoever is as faithful to his promise as Allah is".

What does it say? Zechariah said: My Lord, my wife has become barren, and I have reached the utmost limit of old age; how can I have a son?

With Allah Almighty giving Zechariah (peace be upon him) glad tidings of John (peace be upon him) as a child, Zechariah (peace be upon him), both in amazement and to learn the truth of it well, pleads with Allah Almighty. My Lord, he said, my wife has become barren, and while I have reached the utmost limit of old age, how can I have a son? The utmost limit of old age here: Zechariah (peace be upon him), with the feebleness and weakness his old age brought. That is, his now being cut off from offspring.

The utmost limit of old age. Being cut off from offspring. Yes.

His sexual decline. And as his wife Isha was both old and barren, yet a male child was announced to him, to learn the truth of the matter, that is, to be convinced that the revelation coming to him was from the Most Merciful, he pleaded thus with Allah Almighty. How can I have a son, he said. Yes. Now, of these, what is from the Most Merciful comes to the heart, and what is satanic comes too, to the heart. To tell them apart, you ask for a response. A response. For example, to a person who has risen to a certain rank, a person raised by Allah Himself, inspiration comes to his heart. The explanation of the revelation or of the verses, to the heart, comes.

the person asks for a response, he cannot understand the meaning if it is from the Most Merciful, with verses, verses in return for verses, with hadiths, or with unveilings Allah guides you; this is upon the servants Allah Almighty has raised, the knowledge He has given them. That is why whom Allah Almighty raises in an instant, people, even with a lifespan of five hundred years, could not raise. But people cannot accept this.

Whether they accept it or not is not important. If the words coming out of people's mouths, verses (?), shed a light on it, that is what matters anyway. Yes.

We have already explained the utmost limit of old age here.

Allah Almighty is awaiting a response that he will have a son, it says. He is awaiting a response from Allah Almighty that he will have a son. For this reason he pleaded thus with Allah Almighty. Of course Zechariah (peace be upon him) also knows very well that when Allah wills a thing He only says to it: Be. That is, He fulfils His will. Allah Almighty is free of deficient attributes, and He is All-Knowing. When Allah promises something or says something, He surely fulfils it. In a verse He says: who is as faithful to his promise as Allah? Yes.
