Yusuf 53: (With that) I am not making my nafs (self/ego) appear clean. Verily, the nafs (ego) orders the evil. If Allah has shown mercy and protected, this is different. Verily, Allah is Ghafoor (Most Forgiving) and Raheem (the One who very generously accepts repentance).

Translation

(With that) I am not making my nafs (self/ego) appear clean. Verily, the nafs (ego) orders the evil. If Allah has shown mercy and protected, this is different. Verily, Allah is Ghafoor (Most Forgiving) and Raheem (the One who very generously accepts repentance).

Tafsir

The purpose of Hazrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' saying, "I do not justify my nafs with this: I do not want to boast that I am right, I do not want to be proud and arrogant or to justify myself in order to get pleasure by caressing my ego, because the ego commands evil excessively. Even when a person behaves as Hazrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' behaved with Allah's grace and favor, the ego takes pleasure in it and becomes an ego. Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' spent seven years in the dungeon even though he was right. In the end, although his righteousness was recognized by all the people and he was given high positions by the King, Hazrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' did not like these events for his own soul, and he sought refuge in Allah with the knowledge and wisdom that Allah had given him.

(except my Lord has mercy and protection). Whoever fears Allah and does not turn to evil against all living beings, Allah will take them under His protection like a public cause. He will not stain them in this world or the Hereafter. Because they have taken refuge in Allah. And Allah protects and preserves in the best way those who take refuge in Him.

(Verily, my Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful). Surely Allah is kind and merciful to His servants. He protects and has mercy on those who seek refuge with Him, those who believe in Allah and the Hereafter.

What is said in the video

Surah Yusuf, verse 53 Joseph (peace be upon him) Yet — verse 53, let us read it: Yet I do not declare my nafs innocent. That is, I am not saying this to clear myself. For the nafs commands evil excessively. Those my Lord has had mercy on and protected are different. Protected — different. Those Allah had mercy on and protected are different. Surely my Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. Joseph (peace be upon him), in saying, yet I do not declare my nafs innocent, meant: to be praised for saying I am right, to be carried away by pride and arrogance, or to please my nafs and take pleasure in it — for these I do not want to vindicate myself.

For the nafs commands evil excessively. Even when a person, by Allah's grace and favour, acts as Joseph (peace be upon him) acted, the human nafs takes pleasure and slips into self-conceit. So Joseph (peace be upon him), although he was in the right, lay in prison for seven years. Finally his being in the right became known to all people, and although the king gave him high positions, Joseph (peace be upon him), so that his own nafs would not take pleasure in these events, with the knowledge and wisdom Allah gave him, again took refuge in Allah.

Those my Lord has had mercy on and protected are different. Whoever fears Allah and does not betray any living being and turn to evil, Allah takes these people, (?), under His own protection. He lets no stain touch them in this world or the hereafter. Because they have taken refuge in Allah. And Allah protects and shows mercy to whoever takes refuge in Him in the most beautiful way.

Surely my Lord is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. Surely Allah is compassionate and merciful toward His servants. He protects those who take refuge in Him, who believe in Allah and the hereafter, and has mercy on them.
