The brothers of Joseph came and entered his presence; (Joseph) recognized them but they did not recognize him.
Tafsir
Joseph's father, Ya'qub 'alaihis-salâm', used to live in Palestine, formerly known as Ken'an, on the border of Damascus. A drought started there, so Ya'qub sent his other sons, except Benjamin, to Egypt to buy provisions.
The brothers of Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' came to Egypt and appeared before Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm'. Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' recognized his brothers immediately. His brothers, on the other hand, could not recognize Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm'. Because according to the narrations, Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' was thrown into the well at the age of nine and came to Egypt. In this respect, they could not recognize Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm', who was growing and developing, because his child's face had undergone a change. However, since there was not much change in the faces of the older brothers, Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' had no difficulty in recognizing his brothers.
In fact, the brothers of Hadrat Yusuf 'alaihis-salâm' were already saying that Yusuf was dead and they did not even think that he was alive.
What is said in the video
In this case, verse 58 now — the events, the stories continue again. Allah Almighty continues the stories again. Joseph's brothers came and entered his presence. Joseph recognized them. They could not recognize him. Because Joseph's older brothers can be recognized by their faces. A face changes very little, but since a child's face changes, the older brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) could not recognize him. He was thrown into a well at the age of 9. Now he has reached the age of 24–25. For example, if (?) he was put in prison at 17, he stayed in prison for 7 years. He has reached 24–25. And of course they won't recognize him.
And 7 more years have passed since then. 7 years. After age 24, 7 years have passed. 31. He has reached the age of 32. Meanwhile his older brothers come. Joseph's father Jacob (peace be upon him) and his family, at the border of Damascus, in Palestine, formerly called Canaan — that is where they lived. There, too, drought begins. Thereupon Jacob (peace be upon him) sends his sons other than Benjamin, to get provisions, to Egypt. The brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) come to Egypt. They appear before Joseph (peace be upon him). Joseph (peace be upon him) recognizes his brothers at once. His brothers, however, could not recognize Joseph (peace be upon him).
Because, according to the narrations, Joseph (peace be upon him) was thrown into a well at 9 and came to Egypt. So since a child's face changes, they could not recognize Joseph (peace be upon him), who had grown and matured. But since there was little change in the faces of his older brothers, Joseph (peace be upon him) had no difficulty recognizing his brothers. Besides, the brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) were saying that Joseph was dead by now, and they did not even think it possible that he was still alive.
