(Jacob) said; “Other than being encircled (and being hopeless), I will not send him with you unless you give me a strong oath by Allah that you will certainly bring him to me.” When they gave a promise (as he desired), he said, “Allah is a witness over what we said.”
Tafsir
Ya'qub 'alaihis-salâm' agrees to send Benjamin with his brothers. However, he tells them: "Except if you are besieged, that is, if you are surrounded by thieves, or if you are hit by bandits and save your life, or if a calamity befalls you and you are desperate and helpless, I will send your brother with you if you promise me that you will bring Benjamin back to me. Thereupon, Benjamin's brothers agreed to whatever their father, Ya'qub 'alaihis-salâm' said and gave their father a firm promise that they would bring Benjamin back. Then Ya'qub 'alaihis-salâm turned to his sons and said: Allah is witness to what we have said. For Allah is the best of hearers and the best of knower. He knows what is in people's hearts and what they will do and how it will end. For Allah has written the will of the people as their destiny. Allah knows best and sees His creation in the best way. In this way they made a covenant between them and held Allah as a witness.
What is said in the video
In verse 66, Jacob said: except if you are surrounded and left helpless. Of course, in the old days, on the road they would attack caravans, kill, you know, surround people. In that case, except if you are surrounded, he says. Except if you are left helpless. You will surely bring him back to me, he says. Yes.
Except if you are surrounded, that is, if you are surrounded by robbers, if with brigands you fight to save your lives, or if some (?) befalls you, you make every effort you can and are left powerless and helpless, that is the exception. These situations are excepted. Apart from these, if you give your word that you will bring Benjamin back to me, with you (?) I will send you, he says.
Yes.
Thereupon Benjamin's elder brothers, accepting everything their father Jacob (peace be upon him) said in the direction he wished, give their father a firm promise to bring Benjamin back. Thereupon Jacob (peace be upon him), (?), said to his sons: to what we say Allah is witness, because Allah is the one who hears best and knows best. He knows what passes through people's hearts and what they will do, how it will end in the end. Because Allah has written people's wishes for them as their destiny. Allah will surely know best and see His creatures in the best way. In this way they made an agreement between them and took Allah as witness.
