They said; “We suffered torture before you came to us (as Prophet) and after you came.” Moses said; “(This is) so that your Lord will destroy your enemies and make you rulers on earth in place of them and shows to you how you will act.”
Tafsir
Then the Jews said to Hadrat Musa 'alaihis-salâm', 'We were tortured before and after you came to us as a Prophet. This means: We believe in Allah and we are with you. They said don't hold yourself responsible for these calamities that have befallen us, that is, the massacre of our boys.
Then Moses said to his people that your Lord will destroy your enemies and make you rulers over the earth in their place, so that He may declare to you how you should behave. The meaning of "declare to yourselves how to behave" is that every human being is responsible for what he does. These are the mischiefs of the earth. When you were in distress, you clung to Allah. If you disobey Allah, Who has saved you from this oppression, you will be holding yourselves as witnesses against Allah by what you have done.
What is said in the video
They said too: before you came to us as a prophet, and after you came, we were tortured, they said — that is, the Jews. To Moses: O Moses, do not grieve for us.
Before you, too, these people were oppressing us. You conveyed the truth to us. Even though you conveyed the truth, if we are oppressed again, (?) we were already oppressed before you too. So do not grieve for us, you do your duty. You are right in your duty, you are your Lord's messenger, we have believed in you, we stand behind you — that is the meaning. What does it say? They said: before you came to us as a prophet and after you came too, we were tortured. So it made no difference in any case. When you came to us as a prophet, it did not add torture for us. If it had added torture, if we had followed you again and Pharaoh had said: if you follow him, we will subject you to tortures — then perhaps things would have changed.
Before you and after you, we were never, well, spared Pharaoh's torment. He keeps raining torment down on us, they say. Do not grieve for us, they say.
Moses: until your Lord destroys your enemy and makes you rulers on earth in their place and makes your deeds known to yourselves. That is, in your deeds He makes you witnesses against yourselves. Now here they have (?) Allah Almighty. I have laid out the correct one here. What does it say? They said: before you came to us as a prophet and after you came too, we were tortured. Moses: it may be that your Lord destroys your enemy. Your Lord destroys your enemy. And makes you rulers on earth in their place, and sees how you will act, he said. Now, Moses saying 'it may be' is somewhat debatable. Because it is not Allah Almighty saying it.
Moses is saying it. Here Moses can say 'it may be'. But the sentence at the end is a statement that does not at all befit the glory of Allah. What does the end say?
Makes you rulers on earth and sees how you will act. So Allah Almighty does not know what they will do. According to their circumstances, according to those actions, He will look at it and value it, Allah Almighty. Here it becomes clear that they also know nothing of the covenant. Whereas what does it mean there: makes you rulers on earth and makes your deeds known to yourselves. Your deeds — that is, He makes you witnesses against yourselves. Yes. Thereupon the Jews said to Moses (peace be upon him): before you came to us as a prophet and after you came too, we were tortured. The meaning of this: we believed in Allah, we are with you.
For these afflictions that befall us, that is, the killing of our sons, do not hold yourself responsible, they said. Yes, thereupon Moses to his people: it may be that your Lord destroys your enemy. Because (?). In this case, Moses saying 'it may be' is correct.
Yes. And makes you rulers on earth in their place and makes your deeds known to yourselves. The meaning of 'makes your deeds known to yourselves': every person is accountable for what he does. Every person is accountable for what he does. Since these were a trial of (?), you clung to Allah when you were in hardship. When you finally reach salvation, will you forget Allah? If you go against Allah, who saved you from these oppressions, with your deeds you will have made yourselves witnesses before Allah Almighty. Through the deeds you have done, you will make yourselves witnesses to yourselves, to those around you and to Allah Almighty.
Yes.
