Translation

When Our verses were read to them, they said; “We heard. If we wanted, we surely would be able to say something similar to it. This is nothing but the tales of those before.”

Tafsir

When verses of the Holy Qur'an were recited, the polytheists gathered in Dar al-Nadwa said, "We can recite verses like the verses of this Qur'an. They took Allah's Verses lightly. However, since Allah's Word is based on letters, the coming together of these letters with their separate meanings constitutes a Verse. These Verses have many meanings through these letters. In this respect, if man and jinn were to gather, they could not bring the equivalent of a single verse.

According to a narration, Nadr ibn Hars traveled a lot in Damascus and Rum and read many Books in these places, and he would come and tell these Books to the polytheists of Mecca. Nadr ibn Hars, who was carried away by the tales of the Books he read, mocked the Verses of Allah by saying that the Holy Qur'an was the tales of the ancients.

What is said in the video

The thirty-first verse of Surah Al-Anfal. When Our verses were recited to them, they said — who are they? The polytheists, the polytheists of Mecca. "Yes, we have heard. If we wished, we too could certainly say the like of this." Since they would not give up the arrogant pride of their egos, they could not bow to Allah and, to the point of asking for their own destruction, they held Allah as nothing. If they had feared Allah, could someone say, "O Allah, give me calamities, a painful punishment, rain stones down on me," if he knew Allah? This is not possible. Why is it not possible? We all know Allah exists.

Could you ask Allah for His own wrath, I mean? Because you fear Allah, you would not ask for it. These people too know of Allah's existence, but because they are in a state of arrogance, pride, conceit and (?) of ego toward Allah, they hold Him as nothing, and within their own world, within that circle of ignorance, according to their tiny minds, they defy Allah Almighty. Yes. That is, "nothing will happen to us." They trust in their (?), they trust in their own, you see, supporters. So they take Allah lightly. Yet he does not know that He created those worlds, is the owner of everything there is, from the atom to the globe, within His power, and him too — although Allah created him, although He is such that if men and jinn gathered they could not harm Allah, even so, with that tiny mind, with pride and arrogance, (?), their disbelief increased.

The increase of their disbelief:

their lives that ran against the whims of their egos, their being unable to live out their desires and wishes, their failing to satisfy their carnal feelings, their failing to satisfy their greed for the world, this drove them into distress. Because they did not (?) these ways of life, against the word of Allah they took a stand. Yes. These verses, through these (?), carry many meanings. For this reason, if men and jinn gathered, they could not produce the like of a single verse. Allah Almighty says so.

If men and jinn gathered, He says, they could not produce the like of one verse. According to one narration, Nadr ibn al-Harith traveled a great deal in the lands of Sham and Rum. There he read many books, this man.
